I'm sure if bad habits were easy to break, rafa would..ahem..have stopped "adjusting" his shorts years ago.

Awwww.......PT! You've 'come out' on MW! Good for you! I used to work in the fashion industry in London [in the 70s] and had the pleasure of getting to know several gay people [mostly men] very well! So, I'm pleased to know another one! yay

Young people don't speak like that?  No, they all don't, but from what I hear around me on a daily baisis it would seem that swearing is the norm, particularly for males of all ages - even young children.  And, incidentally, my own language can be pretty ripe, but usually only in private.

However, it seems that Murray thinks that his on-court behaviour will be beneficial to him - http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/tennis-news/2011/05/28/french-open-andy-murray-insists-he-ll-keep-moaning-on-court-if-it-helps-him-succeed-86908-23162479/ - so we may have to live with it until the day comes when and if he somehow finally realises that his histrionics do him no favours because all that happens is that they affect his concentration - and that, no matter how briefly, is costing him valuable points, unlike McEnroe who's famous lengthy outbursts never disrupted his game and, in fact, seemed to spur him on.

What Murray needs to learn is how to channel the energy from his anger and frustration into his game, and if he looks at the matches where he has managed to maintain his composure, he surely must see that.  But seeing as opposed to actually doing something isn't always easy - bad habits die hard - so this takes the whole issue back to either him consulting a sports psychologist or appointing a coach who might just manage to hammer the message home.

Totally agree Aileen, think this info i am about to suggest was picked up on by a previous MW member, Li Na used to be very similiar in her behaviour on court when she was under pressure and loosing, her language got very ripe (in chinese of course), She'd start to berate herself, looking to her box for the answers and generally just implode, she'd walk around the back of the court muttering getting very down on herself. I'm not sure of her new coaches name, but he's been credited with helping her turn this situation around. Now she's on the cusp of becoming French open champion, which i for one believe come saturday evening she will become. Perhaps we should hijack this coach for our Andy. yay

Apparently he did try to stop all his ticks, but found it affected his mental stability somewhat during his matches, its his comfort blanket, not sure if picking my pants continuously out of my arse, could be described as mentally calming, but it works for him, in my opionion it seems to have reverted back to a high level again. If you watch his matches, when he is really being challenged by his opponent these ticks increase in their intensity and occurence - gives us psychologists wonderful inferences into the state of his mind during these passages of play.

PT just wanted to add my support to you for coming out on MW. Good on ya.  And perhaps it helps explain why you don't indulge in the macho posturing of some of those on MW who share your gender but not your sexuality !   Whistle hug  hug

And more recently he also pushes his hair behind his ears before serving.  And add in the water bottles routine....  Funny isn't it that someone who plays that kind of tennis has to rely on these kind of routines.    But I bet  there aren't  Rafa 'fans' on Rafa'sWorld or whatever picking him to pieces for it! Whistle

you've hit the nail on the head Ruthie, its tiresome sometimes and between me and you it can get a tad embarressing when they carry on like they do here on MW, i'd rather say those things to a persons face, get it over with and move on. Just seems so petty and nonsensesical at times.

"Against Bolelli it was a bit strange - when I went behind I felt more comfortable than when I was in front.
I just want to get that mentality into a whole match
."

This statement from Andy after beating Bolelli, and all his subsequent matches to date whilst competing in this years FO, suggest to me that Andy understands himself more than we give him credit for, my only concern with this type of play is that in falling behind his opponent (which gives him added impetus to really go for his shots) he may unwittingly be creating a challenge for himself that is just too great to summount, in essence tripping himself up and not closing the gap. Its obvious to me that Andy is a risk taker, he thrives on the adrenalin rush that these types of self induced challenges create within him. Far from possessing a frail mind Andy actually posses a rather strong mind which is very abstract  - what a unique character he is, the more i learn about our Andy the more i just think he is fascinasting. This theory if proven cements the idea in my own head that Andy is arguably the most gifted and creative tennis player of his generation, and i believe there will always be this discord between the mind and body, its this power struggle that will do one of two things, it will either destroy him or take him to unimaginable heights in the tennis world, i for one hope its the latter of the two claims.
