It's the slams when he needs him most. And presumably he'll still be able to call on Cahill at other times, assuming he's available.
Yes would be interesting to know why they didn't seal the deal when they talked previously.  May well be good reasons for that.  Perhaps Andy wanted a spell doing it for himself first; perhaps Lendl wasn't ready to travel.  Who knows.  It's quite possible they reached a tentative agreement then and kept it quiet.  Anyway perfect timing to announce it now at start of new season.  And I wish them both well for it.

Again, speculating, but maybe they just wanted to try it out before unleashing the media; that way they are sure it is a fit.
Andy was training in Miami with Lendl in Florida - it makes sense to have waited until then.

sorry but can someone enlighten me on Lendl's strengths and weaknesses  as a player.. Im quite young... I have never watched Lendl before.. but I hear that he was a very good player Smile

Not the most naturally gifted. Ruthlessly efficient style and the first guy to really belt his groundshots. He deformed the ball when he hit his forehand. A big serve but rarely came to net. Volleys not a particular strength but became more so as he started to skip the French Open to practise on grass so that he could give himself the best chance of winning Wimbledon (which he never did).

In short: one of the first true power players, with little finesse but a ruthless commitment to winning.

So let's hope that he allows Andy keep the finesse that he has in his game but added power on his groundstrokes certainly won't go amiss.

Of course, his trademark shot was firing the ball directly at the net player. He did it to McEnroe once, completely felling him. Here's another example, in a 'friendly' mixed match.

Oh goodness that must have hurt.  Very powerful that was.  The tennis players were very competitive in that era

I think the biggest area where Lendl can help is on the serve. He had a great, consistent serve, but he was also very shrewd in how he used it. He had a great tennis brain.

At the time, the common practice on clay was to just pump the ball into play and then play a 70-stroke rally until one guy died of boredom. But Lendl's strategy was to fire for more aces on clay than he did on other surfaces. His reasoning was that it didn't matter so much if he missed his first serve cos the other guy was hardly likely to charge the net on his second.

It's not really Lendl's tennis knowledge I'm excited about, it's his will to win and ability to play the big occasions well - this is what AM has been lacking, not skill. Of course, I'm not sure how much use Lendl will be in winning Wimbledon... Very Happy

The bit I'm interested in is that Lendl lost his first few GS finals but came back to become one of the all time greats. It's all about the mental side with Murray now.

If Andy reaches another slam final, Ivan will turn him into a cold hearted robot hell bent on crushing his opponent for the win. Well here's hoping anyway Very Happy

Meanwhile let's not get too excited about the AO! Smile  It'll take a while for changes to take effect but Andy's a quick learner when he wants to be.  I think, though, that as his time with Cahill has shown, Andy is now prepared to listen and take advice on board.  However, I think improvements to the physical side of his game aren't perhaps quite as important as the mental ones.  His serve undoubtedly has to improve, and his forehand needs a bit more power, but can Lendl finally get inside Andy's head and give him that essential psychological boost to enable him to cope with the big moments and thereby enhance his chances of winning a Slam? Ultimately it's all down to Andy himself.  However, if he has the hunger, then ... cmon yeah

I totally agree that 2012 is going to be s very interesting year - do you think the "Murraycoaster" will have less dips this year??  I would love to see Andy get his first GS and see him reap the rewards for his hard work. He is nearly there let's hope that Ivan is the missing piece of the "Andy Jigsaw".   I wish for a lot of things in 2012 but my main wish other than health and happiness is for Andy to be the success that we all know he is capable of, his time of being the bridesmaid to Nadal, Mr Smug and lately Djoko is over it is his time to don the White frock and be the centre of attention!!!!
Happy New Year to all MW members and hopefully we will have loads to celebrate and comment on in the forthcoming year.  Andy may 2012 see you healthy, happy, wise and with a GS trophy in yir cupbosrd!!!  Oh and please Andy play the DC tie in February (cos I've got my tickets).

Oh come on MM - we all cherish the bitten nails, near heart attacks, the prematurely greying hair ... ! Very Happy  Seriously, though, among other things, I hope Andy will be more consistent and that his episodes of going AWOL will become a thing of the past.
Here's to an interesting 2012, a Happy New Year to all on MW, and a healthy, happy and successful year for Andy. cheers
