The longer I'm away from Old Blighty, the stranger things appear. It all sounds so archaic.
I don't really care about the Queen's honours list, unless Andy does.
I agree he's way too young to be called Sir Andy. That would be silly.
Bet his dear grandparents are just wallowing in it. Bless.
Any recipent can turn down the honour I believe, so I'm guessing that Andy (family, friends and team) will be happy at the recognition.
Also, Andy did say after his US Open victory that he was too young for a knighthood (for those saying that he deserved a higher award).
And I live in a country that also has a honour system, so not different for me.

I think you mean CBE. I think Wiggins deserves the knighthood but I was also a bit confused why Farah and Ennis become CBEs while Andy becomes an OBE.

Contratulations Andy Murray O.B.E.
It cant be easy to compile that awards list, there's as many opinions as there are people.
I just want to bask in Andys glory and let this year sink in. It's the icing on the 2012 cake. I would have been gutted if he'd not received an award.
I, for one dont want to detract from others and say it's unfair Andy only got an OBE, compared to other sports people.
Some have represented the country for many years, in athletics for instance. Bradley W. has 4 Golds, not to mention Ben Ainslie for mulitple medals, Mo F. has a 2 Golds. I`m so happy that he has received recognition for his dogged determination. It's his first award but wont be the last.
Well done Andy.

Like others I'm ambivalent about the honours system (and definitely think the empire bit should be scrapped0 but it would have been wrong not to honour Andy and in accepting it Andy also accepted the honour for tennis and for his team. It represents a symbol of recognition.
I don't think it's a parliamentary cttee that decides Aileen although it's possible the cttee does have some parliamentarians on it but may be wrong about that. And yes people get a letter in advance asking whether they would accept if the Queen were gracious enough to give it them or something like that!
My first reaction was to wonder why Andy didn't get a CBE given his USO achievement on top of his Olympic medals. But I read that for younger people who still have some time left in their sporting careers they wanted to leave it open for them to get further honours in future. There's usually a gap of a few years before you can be 'upgraded' but I imagine if Andy won Wimbledon they might break that rule. In any case, if he wins further GSs and/or reaches no 1 before the end of his career I'm sure he'll receive at least one further honour before he retires.
In the meantime, congratulations to Andy and I hope he, his team, his family and Kim can enjoy the recognition.
Incidentally Mark do you plan to put a picture of the OBE medal up on the banner at the top of the home page?

I felt Andy should have at least received the second higher award the MBE, in fact he actually deserves the Knighthood for his services to British tennis since he has been a 17 yr old especially for what he has achieved this year. But I believe his number is already on a Knighthood and this will be given at the end of his career or before if he wins Wimbeldon. Lets have another great year Andy. 3rd time lucky in OZ to start with.

Starryieyed: OBE is higher than MBE. CBE is the one under a knighthood. But as I said I'm sure he'll end up with at least a CBE and possibly a knighthood if he continues at the top of the game and in particular if he wins Wimbledon.

Really pleased for Andy! It feels like the right level of award for now - I'm sure he'll be knighted when he retires.
