Touched by his noodly appendage

Andy Murray's revival in form continued today with a clinical and powerful 6-2, 6-1 display over the Romanian Victor Hanescu.

The two had only met once before, at the 2009 Monte Carlo Masters where Murray ran out an easy winner. In normal circumstances the same result could be expected again but Murray's atrocious recent form added extra spice to the matchup.

From the very start the Scot found the range on his ground-strokes. For the first five games Hanescu was able to respond in kind, but Murray's consistency and variety began to tell and an unforced error from the Romanian yielded the first break in the sixth game. An easy service hold later and Hanescu was serving to stay in the set. He duly crumbled.

Murray broke at the first time of asking in the second set, and from there it was one way traffic. Hanescu offered up a feast of unforced errors and ridiculous dropshots and Murray cruised to victory.

The one sided scoreline is a fair reflection of a match Murray dominated with a mixture of impenetrable defence and scintillating power play. A tougher test awaits in the Quarter Final, where it looks likely Murray will meet David Ferrer again. The winner will be impossible to pick.

Murray's comments
It was good performance. Hanescu is not an out-and-out clay court player so it was a different match than you normally get, but I felt comfortable. I know that against the clay courters I'll have to play more aggressively and will have to improve, but in general I feel a lot better on the court."

yeah he looked good today, that confidence is on its way back. still a bit concerned about that forehand though. he looks even more off balance than usual and you can see he is having to adjust quite a lot to play some of his shots, ie the old looping ball.

Still plenty he can improve on the clay as well. His movement still isn't anywhere near as good as he is on hard and he could find much better angles with the backhand with the added time he has to play his shots.

But all in all, a good performance, and very encouraging indeed.

I disagree with this. He was hitting his forehand deeper and flatter. The loopy ball to reposition is actually a tactic that Nadal uses a great deal - it's slows the rally down, is hard for the opponent to return effectively and allows him to reposition in the court.

Excellent report Boogers and I agree with your further comment above. It is a ploy for more time to move about the court. I'd hate to predict the outcome of today's match but Ferrer has to be favourite.

Your right that the forehand looked better today but he still doesn't look all that comfortable when he has the play it. Some of the time he looked like he was having to dig it out from beneath him and adjust quite a lot, and he still looks very off balance when on the back foot. The times he has played the looping ball it hasn't looked tactical to me - more a result of his being out of position and using it as a last resort. Many were dropping well within the baseline which would give players like Ferrer the initiative rather than allowing him back into the rally.
