All of the papers I've read today have been unanimously kind, which is rather surprising.

I don't think he was really 'crushed' - his sterling performance gave me something to cheer about on a snowy Sunday morning and I thought he played some awesome tennis. Unfortunately Federer is the greatest tennis player ever - but he still had to fight for points, it wasn't all an easy ride. Three cheers for Andy Murray - we will have a British champion in the not too distant future - we believe in you!

Interesting to see how some people have done a 360 on Murray due to the crying,
The emotion in that speech didn't have a 360 on me - i am a murray fan and always will be, but at the end of the match i was pretty much ready to give up on him ever doing anything major now - beginning to think that he simply doesn't want it enough to take that step further and win a major. The tears in the speech however made me have faith again, you could see him how much he wants it and i once again believe he can win one, it showed me he still has the desire.

It's interesting but not surprising, though. He had, up until now, appeared very contained, reserved and aloof off court, and I'm sure that for a lot of people that came across as nonchalance. The genuine emotion he showed made him seem a lot more vulnerable and human - qualities that most people will identify with. His tears weren't cry-baby or petulant - just genuine emotion from a young guy who's been through a lot of ups and downs in recent months (personally also), who was no doubt feeling the pressure and clearly so wants to win at GS level for himself and his country. If anyone ever had any doubt about that (and I have to say I was beginning to) then I think he has put those doubts to bed.
Hopefully the media will also see how much the guy wants to succeed, not only for himself but for his country and fans, and cut him some slack. For me it's another step forward in his maturing process and he's maturing very nicely.

Absolutely.
Good.
Also somebody graffitied my maths book saying, 'Murray lost LOL'
Ive given him quite a talking to, but he still maintains that 'Murray is sh*t'. That's great, I still like him... Gawwd

He will be the next "numero uno" if nobody else comes along (like federer or better) in the foreseeable future...

Well Murray certainly convinced this old cynic that he's not a lost cause - rather the opposite, hence I'm joining you. And I'm so glad the press gave him a boost instead of the expected usual knock-down. Maybe even hardened sports journalists have hearts after all.
If anyone's interested, they might like to read this article which appeared in The Scotsman - though for me the picture of Murray says it all.

Thanks Fraser. I also read some of the links with the article and it was interesting that Federer thought he might lose the match if it went to a fifth set. Ironic that it was Murray's usually sound backhand which finally let him down. I agree with Becker however that Andy does need to get some feedback from players with GS experience. He's been stubbornly adamant until now that he's happy about his game. Could be this defeat might just change his mind. It's making that final leap which is going to be so difficult.

Living where I do I don't know the newspaper concerned but thought article very good. Agree about the picture, and it's certainly not the face of a weak man. Murray will go far.
I'm new myself and hope more people like you will now join the forum. Age is no barrier.

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

In my last post I said after the AO defeat I didn't think Andy would win a slam this year. Today I watched the final again but this time with my tennis head on, not my heart and I have changed my mind.
I have been watching tennis for 50 years and went to Wimbledon when you could queue for a ticket to stand on centre court, many years ago. (as an aside, they packed us in so tight, you had to stand with your hands on your bum all afternoon, otherwise you got "touched up" all the time!)
I thought at first Andy would be so dissappointed he would not be able to raise his spirits enough to try again this year but with my tennis head on today it was so clear that Andys game was below par and therefore he must know himself he can play better.
If he had been like Verdasco last year who played the game of his life against Nadal and still lost, I think it would be a different story. As you know Verdasco didn't look as fit this year and didn't play at his best. Verdasco will never win a slam, he does not believe he can. He is not prepared to work even harder.
My point is that Andy is prepared to work harder and fortune favours the brave but he really must control the nerves. My husband who knows nothing about tennis saw Andy coming onto court on last nights news and said "he looks very nervous".
If my husband can see it, "smuggy" got it in one and knew he would win before he had hit a ball.
In my opinion "smuggy" did not beat Andy, Andy beat himself and I'm sure even Andy knows it.
If I hear one more time that Great Britain has not won a slam for 74 years I will scream!!!!
If anybody sees any photos of Andy arriving back in UK could they please post them for me, thank you.

Hi Jean
! Found your post really interesting. Have to say I too thought Andy looked nervous when he came on court, and thought "oh dear, this doesn't look good ..."
Yes, I too stood in the "sheep pen" at Wimbledon when I lived in London in the early 1960s. I used to rush there from work - you got in for half-price (2s:6d [12.5p] I think it was) after 5 pm! Still managed to see some great play though before it got dark. Saw Rod Laver play a couple of times.
Glad you're joining the forum. I'm again appending a link to a report in "The Scotsman" (one of Scotland's two national newspapers). The picture of Andy's face is heart-breaking, but he's no quitter.
