Andy Murray defeated Rafael Nadal 6-4 5-7 6-3 in an enthralling final in Abu Dhabi, to round off an excellent three days for the Scot in the United Arab Emirates. Despite the exhibition atmosphere, both players produced magical tennis, particularly in the third set to captivate the 5,000 strong crowd.

The Scot had come into the match after pipping world number two, Roger Federer to the post in a marathon three setter, the day previous, and the level of tennis continued as he broke the Spaniard early on. Murray was hitting aggressively off both wings from the start, forcing Nadal to retrieve from all areas of the court and occasionally stepping in to hit some delicate touch volleys. The world number one had started badly against Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals, and he looked rusty in the earlier stages. However, he upped the ante as Murray verged on sealing the first set and broke to level proceedings at 4-4.

Murray seemed unperturbed and broke yet again, and this time, got the elusive hold to clinch the first set.

In the second set, Murray's serve dipped and Nadal pounced, pressuring Murray's second serve with relative success, and he broke in the twelfth game to force a deciding set.

Both players saved their best tennis for last, with some scintillating retrievals and awe-inspiring returns from Murray being the highlights.

The British number one broke for the second time to keep his perfect record in 2009, and despite receiving no points for his victory, Murray will know this sets him up perfectly for his Australian Open campaign which will begin later in the month.

If he keeps this form up, there's no end to what he can achieve this year.  His tennis is actually becoming quite scary - in a good way!  yes

Stunning match yesterday - unforgettable.  Aussie Open? well - after all the hype everyone will be expecting him to win - no pressure then!! Whistle He can't win them all (?) but 2009 is an exciting year to look forward to. Will he hold in Doha? He didn't have Nadal or Fed there last year but the prospect of a repeat performance of the last two days is mouth-watering. Good Luck Andy - all the hard work is paying off!! yay yay

Andy is very good at breaking his opponent's service game but not so good at holding, particularly if he breaks early in the set.  IMO he still needs to be more consistent on his first serve and still needs to improve his second serve, especially as he goes deeper in a match. If he can do this, Andy will shorten his matches considerably and last out a slam much better and have a good chance of winning it.  Until he does this, I do not think he will win a slam in spite of his brilliance.
