What an awesome match report on AM.com. blink lol

WOW they have such a way with words!!!

Hallo all, i'm back and after a hideous day it was made worse by seeing the last set! I have to say this is the first time I've seen andy act almost unprofessionally and cant be bothered for a while! Not sure whats behind it all however I know its only a 500 but he does owe it to himself to give it his best shot! Only hope he's not injured for the us tour now that would be disappointing!

The only real disappointment from this loss is that he stays at #4 till IW.

What did am.com write? All I could find was three lines saying he lost... Or is that what you were laughing about that that's all they wrote?

Good report from Clydey there. As a fan of Murray (as a Scot, who else is there to support at a world level - apart from Sir Chris Hoy) I am worried/delighted (ie not sure) about the lack of excuses being posted. Usually when he lets us down, yet again, all the apologists jump in. 1. He's still young - not now he ain't 2. he's building his stamina and strength - he's at his physical peak 3. when he wins one slam he'll win more - yeah , like andy roddick, y,mean? 4. his game is perfect, he just needs to sort his head - he's SCOTTISH, so he's programmed to lose! (did I take that too far?). I guess we just got to be glad we're having someone who's slightly better than Henman, for a wee while.

From his interview it could be assumed that he's using these minor tournies to try out new things - no mention of niggling injuries - and he doesn't seem too bothered at losing - perhaps it's part of the overall game plan. Good report James.

Exactly. At this stage of his career, I don't think he cares much about winning these types of tournaments. I don't think he cares about ranking now either, he knows getting a Slam is the only thing that counts and he'll get his no-1 ranking naturally if he starts to win Slams.

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

Actually, listening to the video I felt like kicking Andy's backside.  Goodness knows what's going through his head but I suppose if he wants to try out new things then the minor tournaments are the place to do it, even if it gives him grief.  Obviously he no longer sees them as challenges and that winning these titles is no longer important, and I can understand that, but I think he ignores 500 tournaments at his peril - the lineup here was pretty good, even without Fed.  My worry is that he becomes so Slam focussed that he ends by messing things up, although I take slight comfort that after an illness blip last year he started to up the revs at Indian Wells.

Frustrating it may be, but we really have no alternative other than to go along with what Andy thinks is right.  It is, after all, his career.

Also, with Nadal and Del Potro crocked and Davydenko now quitting with injury, all so early in the season, maybe it's time the ATP sat up and took notice.  And if Andy's sending them a message too, well that's all to the good.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

I'm not sure he was uninterested. I didn't see all of the match, but, as he said in the PM interview, he was trying new things. I noticed that he was ultra-aggressive on his groundshots and took the ball on the rise - much, much earlier than usual. In fact, it was a bit like watching Agassi.

I think he's deliberately changing his game, specifically with a view to create the kind of tennis that can beat Federer - taking the ball early and catching him out of position, which is when Federer tends to mistime and shank the ball. If that's the case, it's going to be a while before the changes bed in and he gets comfortable with them.

Interesting and encouraging comment, especially as it shows that Andy does appear to be seriously learning lessons.  We have to be patient ...
