Murray fights back to flummox Federer « on: January 09, 2009, 05:58 PM »

A clinical first serve, and nerves of solid steel carried Andy Murray to his third Doha final on the trot, after a 6-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Roger Federer.

The British number one had the pre-match psychological edge after three consecutive victories against the world number two. It seemed to show, with Murray winning his service games comfortably, his first serve dominating proceedings. Only one break point opportunity was carved out in the first set, as it was a tight affair which edged into a topsy-turvy tie-break. Murray can consider himself unfortunate to have lost the point at 6-6 in the tie-break, with a let call resulting in a Federer ace, and the Swiss capitalised to clinch the first set in an hour.

The Scot would need to dig deep, as he has done so often in the past, and at 0-40 down in the third game, Murray served admirably to save the three break points and stay in contention. The missed opportunities rattled Federer, and errors started to creep into his game, particuarly on the backhand side. Murray's revitalised serve was clicking and the 21 year old forced a decider.

Despite struggling with his back, which has been troublesome all week, Murray continued to dismantle Federer and the 2005 and 2006 champion relinquished another break, and with it, the match.

Murray will face Andy Roddick in the final, after the American number one dispatched Gael Monfils earlier in the afternoon.

great performance. he was robbed of the first set after that shocking line call but recovered superbly.

i can only think that the extra weight training he did over the break is what's causing his back to hurt.

i think he'll be fine. a rod will have his work cut out.

Andy did a Djokovic with the injury timeout, hope it was warranted.

For the second time in a week Andy played brilliant and calculated tennis to beat Federer. Having watched Andy's progress over the last two and a half years, the ups and downs, the 'behind the sofa' dips and come backs, I cannot quite believe this decisive, aggressive, tennis player he has become. It's amazing and I am enjoying every minute of it, much enhanced by the cheerful banter which goes on on this excellent website.  I hope so much that he remains injury-free to eventually claim a coveted Grand Slam trophy in 2009. Good luck Andy and take care. udaman udaman

If there was ever any doubt about Federer's lack of class, watch what happens at the end. Cold handhake with Murray and he completely ignores the umpire and doesn't shake his hand.

Of course it was. He had all the momentum when he asked for the trainer.

Some fool on the BBC 606 site was claiming that Murray faked the injury to get in Federer's head. Nevermind that he seemed to pick up the injury in the game just before calling the trainer, so making him struggle with his serve and having to fight to hold it - of course he decided to do that on purpose, he wanted to give Fed a good chance to break him because it would mess with his head.  Rolling Eyes

Some other idiot immediately said that Federer never asks for the trainer and struggled to think of the last time he did - Masters Cup, anyone?  clap

I've always thought that Fed is a pissy little sore loser - today confirmed it.

Well if that happens then it's the correct decision given how much of a favourite he is likely to be for Aus. Need to get priorities right.

As a Federer fan, I must admit Murray is dominating The Master and Federer must somehow up his game another level!  I predicted a Federer win and I must man up to the fact he lost again to Murray! Murray is up and coming just like Federer said after the US Open!  If Murray is to take over the tennis world....I hope he dominates Djokovic like he is now doing to my favorite player Federer!   yay

Hmm, that is a concern, he certainly played well enough at the end of the match today, but backs can hurt like fook the next day.

People have been saying "Fed is such a gracious competitor" for a very long time... of course it's easy to be "gracious" when you win. Bit harder when you're being "owned" by someone on a regular basis...!
