He didn't deserve to lose it. Just played a crap tie break. I didn't think it was as dire as everyone's making out. He was just a little tight that's all. I was never in doubt that he was just gonna relax into it and win.

Just shows what the pressure put on by the media can do I suppose. As you say, now he's played a match he'll hopefully knuckle down and play better. If he can get past Gulbis then it's a nice little path into the QFs at least, where he SHOULD be playing much better by then.
I'm bloody nervous now though, was hoping for a smooth ride in the first round, not a bit of a wobble. Roll on Thursday, when he can press on - the wait between matches isn't good for my stress levels!
He's carried over his serve from Queens. Can you imagine how difficult he will be to beat if he serves like that and brings his A game? Scary.

It was nowhere near as dire. The problem is that a lot of people base their views on what should happen on paper, as opposed to form on the day. Kendrick played great and served out of a tree.
Murray hit 52 winners to 9 UEs. Take away 20 winners because of aces and you're left with 32 winners off the ground to 19 UEs. Those are some excellent stats.

To me, Andy was so nervous from the start - being booted out in the first round simply couldn't be contemplated. Kendrick was playing really aggressively, he had no pressures, and it was great to see Andy working his way into the match and dealing with whatever was thrown at him. So glad he won.
I was at the match, and, to me, I felt that the groundswell in the crowd were definitely on his side, but (like myself, I guess) tend to be more reserved, and I think there is a point that it needs a 'backs against the wall' situation to really get vocal. It's the British way, I think.
But, there were a number of 'anyone but Murray' morons around who were much more vocal -
you name it, they were dredging it up - being Scottish, the old hating England and the English, what he looked like, was wearing, his expressions, calling him 'Tim' and a loser, the fact his mother was watching, rubbishing his brilliant shots and totally cheering on Kendrick's brilliant shots etc etc.
I guess these idiots had paid £40 to watch the match - but all they seemed to enjoy being was negative and dismissive. No wonder British tennis is in the state it's in. I could gladly have throttled them. So glad Andy let his tennis reply to them.

It really saddens and angers to me to think that such idiots were there to ruin it for everyone else. Sad, sad people.

Watching the highlights now, he doesn't look nearly as assured as he did at Queen's...
Does anyone think he was nervous at all? (Sorry, I wrote this without reading Matchpoint's review
but I wasn't alone in thinking Andy was nervous)
I obviously didn't catch the last set - was available on line here but my internet connection was just too darn slow, but I did listen to Wimbledon radio - I missed some good shots but the sounds of it. Obviously his serve let him down badly today - no-where near the %'s he was getting at Queen's and something to work on.
Onwards and upwards Andy!

yup, i would agree Clydey. He certainly didn't play an amazing match by all accounts but he got the W. It is for this reason that Murray is 3 in the world and knocking at the door of becoming a slam winner. Even when he plays within himself, he can still find a way to win.
I think Mac put it very well. Kendrick played and A+ match and Andy Played about a B. I thought that he looked very nervous for the 1st coupe of games and the match didn't have any rhythm to it in the first couple of sets which didn't help.

I only caught the last game and the short highlights on BBC, but I'd heard his serve was excellent, about the only really good thing about his game...
Let's hope that he can begin to piece together the winning combos in the next match. I remember this happening in the US Open last year - looked dodgy against Llodra and very dodgy against Melzer, before turning it on against Stan - we know the rest.

Tits or twats! Any will do.
Andy, ignore them! There are plenty of supporters out there for you who are proud of you!

I did actually comment last night that I felt the crowd were much louder last night than they had been for him in R1 in the past. I think everyone's just getting so excited at the prospects on what might be happening a fortnight from now.
It can only get louder!
And you're always gonna get some idiots who don't get it and hold a grudge. My brother never liked Tim, sourcing the fact that he hit a ball girl as his reason. That was a very similar situation to the football comments but it was his reason.
I had actually wondered recently if he was going to be good enough for the SW19 crowds. He never seems to have the same support as Tim. And once he's won it (be it this year, be it later) he'll have the 'last British man to win Wimbledon crown'.
But I just think that when Oliver English boy, kid from Oxford who trained on his Granda's personal tennis court, comes along the papers be looking for him to be the first Englishman to win Wimbledon since the great FP and Andy will be forgotten. The phrase 'of course, we had Andy Murray who won it in 2009. But Oliver would be the first English player to win it since 1936' would be regularly uttered on the news.
I hope I'm wrong but I do sometimes wonder if Andy will be good enough.
Mind you, if you look into FP's history he was an unorthadox player from a working class background. The tennis toff's hated him and now look at the status he's given. So perhaps I'll be proven wrong.

Well, we had commentators curse in the 1st set, think it was 3-2 to Andy, and someone commented how Andy hadn't lost a point so far - think he lost his serve shortly after.

I thought he didn't play too badly despite dropping the set and I don't think he was nervous. It was good for him to have a battle. I'm with Clydey on this one.

Very sad: but he isn't an easy person to get to know because of the reserve - the serious face etc. They would learn a lot if they chose to read the constructive articles or follow his other tourneys just a little.
