Andy Murray beat Greg Rusedski in the final singles match to seal victory for Scotland in the inaugural Aberdeen Cup.

The England v Scotland team competition finished 4½-2½ as the 18-year-old Scot avenged his loss the previous day to Rusedski with a 4-6 6-4 10-1 win.

Another tight match showed Murray, who has surged up the rankings this year, is closing the gap on the British No 2.

But Rusedski, 32, was hampered by a calf injury, with Murray racing through their tie-break decider.

Rusedski praised Murray's ruthlessness when his injury began to hamper his mobility:
That's a good sign - we want to see players showing no mercy.

Rusedski added he would still be gunning for Tim Henman's British number one spot in 2005:
And now it's a three-man competition with Andy, Tim Henman and myself. It's going to be interesting next year.

What an absolutely insulting article.  I really don't know what to say.  The derogatory arrogance of it leaves me speechless.  I truly hate the press sometimes  Evil or Very Mad

'The whims of an 18 year old'  Do they really think Andy has that little substance to him.  I'll tell you something, if I was Andy Murray reading that I'd be livid.

I don't care how big Andy becomes, I'm willing to bet that he'll never shun his Scottish fans, and to suggest that he played this tournament on a whim is utterly disgusting and insulting not only to him, but to everyone in Scotland.

Its just ridiculous....i mean it was meant to be a fun tournament, it was played as a fun, competitive tournament.
Just because there's no ranking points at stake doesn't make it any less worthy - i mean what about national pride people??
You have to popularise tennis somehow - this is a fab way to do it......

Its also extremely insulting to the other scottish players - yes the tournament probably came about because of andys rise, but that doesn't mean the other members of the team aren't good.....

stupid stupid press.....
most papers didn't even cover it in the back pages today....
