What gives David Lloyd the right to be so personal about the best British player we have ever had in the open era.  What exactly did he acheive?   Everyone seems to be crawling out of the woodwork with an opinion just now - I really hope Andy comes out tommorow all guns blazing and leads the DC team to victory which will boost his spirits.  Then I hope he takes the US hard court season by storm and shuts up all these egotistical no marks that seem to have an awful lot of negative things to say about Andy.  Wimbledon was dissappointing -if the majority of us on this forum feel like we did after last Friday - imagine how Andy feels.  Keep the faith and believe that he can do it.  First things first a blistering performance in the Davis Cup to get things started - worked for Djoko!!!!!

Really good comment - the whole 'story' is a joke and actually quite insulting to Andy Murray who did well to dismiss it for what it was.

I don't know how David Lloyd ever got on BBC commentating he is quite awful at it and often comes out with inane stuff like this just to fill the silence. Andy should enter the US Open with a beard.

Guys, some of you keep confusing John and David Lloyd.

Both captained the GB Davis Cup team.

John does commentary and punditry for BBC and is the one who was married to Chris Evert.

David owns a chain of health clubs.

Oh right I vaguely remember there was another less blonde one. Why have you got Andrew Castle  as your Avatar ? Better be a good explanation.

I haven't come across a link for the Davis Cup?
It's also being streamed free on the LTA website.

The Herald declined to let me read it unless I registered, but I'd already read Andy's response on the BBC website and agree with what he says, although I question the wisdom of his comment that he knows more about tennis than his ex-player critics, unless, of course, he's referring to the game as it's played today, not as it was in the 'dinosaur' era.

Let's see what happens tomorrow.  My money says he'll at least be clean shaven and maybe his locks will have been tamed a little too <vbg>
He's shaved, apart from a bit of a moustache.

Let's face it, Andy just simply isn't a collar and tie man.  He doesn't look comfortable in a suit and hasn't a clue how to tie a tie properly.  And although I think he looks so much better clean-shaven, I don't really give a damn what he looks like on court so long as he plays his very best tennis.

In today's Daily Mail "He is a petulant man-child, surly in defeat and deluded by a well-developed sense of entitlement".  "Needs to grow up fast".  "Wise up and listen to your dad".  No, it's not David Lloyd, it's Stirling Moss talking about Lewis Hamilton.

Sure David Lloyd is allowed to have his own opinions over this matter but maybe he should just stick to talking about, and focusing on, Murray’s tennis and not his facial hair. Lloyd’s basically saying that if Murray had a shave then he would’ve hit his forehand and beaten Nadal at Wimbledon. roflmao Yeah right. Rolling Eyes

Murray’s problems aren’t caused by hair and his beard (or attempt at growing a beard lol) has nothing whatsoever to do with his ability to win a Grand Slam. Murray’s problem is a confidence one and once he starts to get better mental fortitude his game will reflect that and he’ll start winning the Slams. His tennis, is at times, amazing and his technical ability is easily as good as the top three (so when he puts everything together he’ll be great).

Overall this is a comment that Lloyd should have kept to himself. It tells you a lot about Lloyd himself and, to a wider extent, the society we live in that all he (and others) can focus on is the obsession with image. Let’s face it (so to speak lol) these comments are nothing but a load of stuffy old establishment nonsense that’s being perpetuated by David Lloyd at the moment. It’s a generational thing for sure but it’s also an out of touch, lacking in relevance and quite frankly snobbish observation.

It’s also exactly the type of unwarranted rubbish that adds nothing to any debate (and tells you all you need to know about what's wrong with Tennis in the UK) but is intended to self promote and publicise their own agenda (we all know that David Lloyd's gyms have been mentioned a few time by various people in the media over this so I’m sure Lloyd is happy to accept the free publicity).

Murray has, I’m certain, more important things to worry about than shaving. Besides, I’m sure Murray (and his fans) would prefer him to be himself, and look himself, rather than being a corporate and sponsorship cultivated clone that’s moulded and shaped (not to mention shaved) into a stooge of the brand merchandisers like many other tennis players I could mention. Many players for example have, to a certain extent, been pretty much buried behind their so called public images (there aren’t many on the circuit at the moment who show off their real personalities).

I like Murray as he is. At least he looks real.

David Lloyd is a dick.

He was also right. Muzzah's on court persona is amateur.

David Lloyd opened his first leisure club in 1980 and in 1995 sold the business to Whitbread for £200million.  That hardly fits the name tag you choose to give him.  He is obviously very astute and successful.  He may not have been the greatest tennis player at the time, but there is a "winning formula" to success and he has definitely found it.  Sometimes when AM is offered advice and constructive criticism from those who have already walked in his shoes, he might do well to learn from their mistakes, as they have the benefit of hindsight.  I'm convinced that the Lloyds, Rusedski, Henman and others see their younger selves in him and want for him what they didn't attain for themselves.  However, if he chooses to learn from his own mistakes, then it could be that he's wasting valuable time.

Yes, he is a professional sportsman with a sometimes amateur persona, just like Hamilton when it's a bad day at the office.

Variations of the idiom "tidy desk, tidy mind" could be applied to this argument.  Djokovic is immaculate in his appearance.  Nadal is very precise about how he arranges his bag, towels and bottles, etc.  Andy pulls items out of his bag, then stuffs them back in disarray.  His hair isn't "styled" to look the way it does and his patchy face hair isn't exactly designer stubble either.  Surely when he looks in the mirror he sees a "mess".  As much as I like him as a person and appreciate his marvellous tennis, he does, from my view, look scruffy.  Sorry.  No doubt HE feels good about himself.  However, if his hair were cut professionally, clean shaven, head held high, shoulders back, it would radiate a more confident air and perhaps even reflect an edge in his game.  When Borg looked the way he did, it was in an era of hippie types and he didn't really look out of the ordinary.   Just my opinion.
I think this is singularly a lot of crap. I take no preference to his looks, if he is comfortable with it. Personally, I like his style and attitude on the "ex-Bristish" tennis "players" who have commented on his appearance. Notice he could not say "Stars" cause the last one died more than a half century ago!!!
Cutting his hair and shaving ain't gunna make him play any better, and consequently, not doing it won't make him play any worst!!! In my opinion, he's got good style apart from the herd!!! Look at your pretty boy Henmen....being "clean" didn't get him very far on the tour!!!

Please don't assume that HenmAn is my pretty boy, thank you, and a world ranking of 4, 6 grand slam semi-finals and 15 ATP titles wasn't "very far on the tour" in your opinion.  Please get things into perspective and take your blinkers off.  Pardon me, but Tim is on TV now and I appreciate his expertise more than yours AND his command of the English language.
