Andy Murray has hit back at Greg Rusedski and other Sky pundits for suggesting that he should play more aggressively against the top players.

Yeah, who are these 'experts'? Barry Cowan? Greg Rusedski? I think I know more about tennis than Barry and Greg. I work very hard with my coaching team to come out with the right game-plan. I've been told a lot of times that I'm very astute.

You don't get to be No 2 in the world at anything if you're one-dimensional. If I go out at the O2 Arena playing ultra-aggressive and lose all three of my matches, people would say, 'What are you doing?

Regardless of what people think, if I don't win a major tournament in my career I will still have enjoyed the way I played. I think it's different to what most other players are doing.

Murray will take on Roger Federer at the O2 Arena on Tuesday, following Monday's group B matches.

I always suspected that he didn't play more aggressively because he wouldn't enjoy his tennis as much. It's his whole life, so if changing his game style would remove the fun out of tennis then fair enough.

Wow, I thought he was mates with Greg! lol

Good on him for sticking up for himself. He's obviously decided that it's his way or nothing. He mixed it up well against Del P yesterday anyway (second set idiocy apart), I saw some lovely aggressive stuff at times. Hopefully he can keep that mix and hit the heights next year. cmon yeah

(Small matter of the rest of this tournament first, of course! lol)

Andy says he enjoys the way he plays, maybe he likes the challenge of playing the cat and mouse game, trying to lure his opponent into the trap, I wonder if he plays chess, that's what his style of tennis reminds me of, he moves the pawns around the board and then when the time is right and the pieces are all in the right place he strikes, checkmate, game over.  Intellectual tennis as opposed to bull in a china shop stuff.  w00t

I'm a counter-puncher and I like to let the other player attack and make the errors... I can imagine I would find tennis less enjoyable if I changed to an aggressive game style.

Good for Andy !  He's suffered in silence long enough with all the pundits (and us at times) having a go at him.
It's his decision the way he plays his tennis.  I do think as he gets a bit older he will be more limited on the athleticism and may think again but then again he may decide Money Made - Life is more important .
Thought yesterday that one or two spots of real aggression came out when needed - boy was he focused in that third set

Can't fault the guy for playing in the style that's enjoyable for him.  If, at the end of his career, he's happy with all he's achieved, then that's the important thing, even though it may be frustrating for others.

He played great tennis yesterday, mixing the aggression with the cat and mouse, changing things up when he needed to - his own tactical game - a very clever game and I don't think I've seen him play quite like that before. There was more aggression but he didn't overdo it, it just blended in. I'm glad he's defended himself in this way and he not only told Greg etc he told us as well - 'cos we keep on at him to be on the attack. He has perhaps 8 long and punishing years left to play his best tennis and if this is the way he enjoys it I have to say - Good Luck to you - I'll always enjoy watching your brilliance - because that is what some of those shots were yesterday, both from you and from delP. A super match. Hope you take the pants of Fed!! yahooo cmonandy

I say good on him! You do things in life for you, no one else is going to, and like Elly said if he looks back at the end of his career and his happy with what he got, then fantastic, not many people can say that. He's a very smart and talented guy - he knows what he is doing and clearly something is working for him otherwise he wouldn't have achieved what he has this past year. A big well done to him! Very Happy

His way of saying "If I weren't British you wouldn't rate me at all", which is probably true quite frankly.

Let's have a closer look at the pundits team on British stations...

The Sky team includes :

British players, which pre Murray were almost universally Serve and Volleyers who didn't know a thing about defensive play.
Peter Fleming, former doubles player, so bound to be pro offensive Tennis.
Pat Cash, former Serve Volleyer and so bound to pro offensive Tennis.
Shiras, who got his best results on Grass and so bound to be pro offensive Tennis.

BBC also adds :

McEnroe, former Serve Volleyer and so bound to be pro offensive Tennis.
Becker, prefers the Serve Volleying playing style.

Wilander is about the only naturally defensive player I've seen on British stations, correct me if I'm wrong, and he only turned up for RG.

You've also got a feast of commentators who've spent so much time around these guys that they are influenced by there opinions and so puppet them as facts, it's the same in Australia and in the USA from the generation which produced commentators so the English speaking world is naturally biased against defensive Tennis so it's hardly a surprise there's universal viewpoint that he needs to dramatically change his gamestyle to win a Slam.

Remember Game Set and Mats?! LOL

That was sooo lame! They used to talk about it all day of Eurosport at RG, ask him about three really easy questions which he answered really badly, and then that was it!
