I don't think he's denying that he made the original comments
Seems like he is to me,

Before: "he should be suspended by the ATP"
After: "I never said that he should be suspended"

Seems like he is to me,

Before: "he should be suspended by the ATP"
After: "I never said that he should be suspended"

But in the original quote, he's talking about 'the number one seed of a tournament', not Andy specifically (though it's obvious that's who he's alluding to). As long as Andy's name isn't specifically mentioned, he's probably trying to change the meaning of his words after the event, making out that he's speaking hypothetically and not calling for a specific ban here.

I agree with you in that he's realised he went OTT and wants to redress things a little - the guy's probably a lawyer when he's not organising an ATP 250 event! lol

The guys right, for Andy to pull out so close to the tournament, is a bit dodgy. Then the fact that he 'promised' to play after pulling out last year. But then the bloke is a tournament director, he should know what tennis players are like, rankings and stuff just mean that people's schedules are so changeable. A big deal has been made out of this, the publicity this whole event has generated, has probably made up for the fact that he pulled out anyway! Also, this close to the tournament, people have already bought their tickets anyway, most people are still gonna go, and even if they decide not to bother going, they probably still make money out of it anyway, so this bloke should just suck it up and move on.... blahblah

Yet one more "agency" telling Andy how he should be doing things:

 Tournament directors
 The press- here and abroad
 TV commentators
Retired players from all over the world
 Players still playing
 Fans
 Non-fans
etc etc.

At least it does show what a draw Andy is.

I say, let Andy do what he does best, which is play tennis. He's not a show dog. He has to do what he believes is right and certainly not tip toe around his ambition to please everyone.

Im with Marseille boss on this one. It think in the priveledged position Andy is in he has certain responsilibilies to adhere to and showing up at a tournie he promised to play is one of them.

Im glad Andy isnt playing though because he'll be more rested 4 IW/Miami etc, but he could have pulled out a bit earlier.

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

I agree it's a bit off but it seems like making a mountain out of a molehill to me.  So Andy "promised" to play this year - what price promises in the uncertain world of sport?  My real concern is that he cited fatigue as being the reason for withdrawing.  If this is indeed true, then it doesn't bode well for the tough challenges that lie ahead.  Is there perhaps something more behind this? A niggling injury maybe? Think

Gah I don't want to sound like Negative Nancy over here, but isn't it likely that if Andy just wanted to get out of the tournament (and didn't want to say it) he'd cite fatigue? It's a lot easier to a) fake, b) recover from then say an actual injury or illness.

Yeah this whole 'fatigue' thing is a touch this early in the season...

Being deceitful seems to me to be uncharacteristic of Andy, and if he's resorted to telling untruths because he simply doesn't want to play, then something certainly isn't right.

Eyebrow raise.
