But if they do away with 2nd serve, isn't that bad news for Andy?

His 1st serve has been awol lately.

The 25-second rule is nonsense. And there's no way of enforcing it that doesn't cause some kind of problem.

It's radical but my argument has always been this: do away with the 2nd serve.

If that isn't possible, ban or limit ball bounces before the service action begins.

Interesting ! I'm generally opposed to making radical changes in any sport - especially one which remains entertaining and successful.  Although, it might be fun to have a trial with no 2nd serves - many squeaky bums I think.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

My argument for no second serves goes like this: spectators generally prefer to see long rallies than aces or service winners or short points caused by big serves. There would also be more action and less buggering about.

Against that, as Phil says, courts are being slowed down to cater for this and it's killing the players. So maybe now is not the right time to introduce one serve. I think the perfect combination would be faster courts and no second serve.

Yeah it's pretty easy to tell, it's a joke my friend. It's funny, the common myth from Andy haters is that he strives on slow courts, but these ******* courts are awful for him.

It's definitely a myth that he's a slow court player. Andy's best surface is always medium fast.

Yeah, I accept that it's way better than in the 80s and 90s when the average rally at Wimbledon was 1.5 shots. Despite what the 'purists' say, there's no fun in serve and volley.

So.. if RG is faster, and Andy's play is aggressive, does this bore well for Andy on the dirty clay?

I also find the 25 seconds rule a bit ridiculous. I didn't like it when the umpire gave Gasquet a warning that he was about to cross the limit, when he needed a few more seconds to breathe properly. This shouldn't be a game of live or die. They should extend it to 45 seconds. Points are much longer these days after all and players need more time to regroup themselves after long points.

love the 2 sid.
re 25 secs rule:  I think Andy has said he approves of it but that it should be longer, I think 30 secs.  I think that makes more sense.  Taking the rule more seriously does stop Rafa and Nole messing about for so long between serves.
Nigel: your earlier question about the national papers.  Guardian has relied totally on agencies at both IW and Miami because their tennis correspondent doubles as boxing correspondent and boxing seems to have priority at present.

Yep, you can't slow down the surfaces and insist on less time between points.

That's a ridiculous idea, Nigel. They simply need to speed up the different surface to different speeds and keep the variety that once existed not so long ago.

The 25s rule was intend to stop serial offenders like Rafa and Djokovic taking 40s+ just between regular points. There needs to be a lot of leeway in regards to long matches and tiring rallies.

He's certainly going to relive that match point a few times...
Even Andy admitted he got a bit lucky here, but that's the way it goes in tennis.  It's shots like this though that make Hawkeye prove its worth - although we know Fed isn't in love with it.  Not quite sure what his problem is, really.
