Madrid has a history for being a weird tournament as a whole. They should dump it. It's not worth it.
Agreed.  At best the ATP should never have allowed it to switch from Hard to Clay and from Autumn to Spring.  Bonkers

Nice report, Luke. I agree with OSS that Andy looks a lot more comfortable on clay these days, well, more comfortable altogether really and best of all hitting the clay off his shoe was the worst thing he did (not that there was anything wrong with doing that that).  He looked pretty comfortable all along, though he did say something quite clearly on the court about something being “impossible” he did not let it get him down.  Not sure what that was about.

So he’ll be playing in Rome, happily then we’ll be seeing him again soon.  C’mon Andy!

Watched the first set last night .  I'm glad I didn't watch it in real time as, having had zero expectations of this match, he would have raised my hopes only to dash them again.   It seems to me that for quite long parts of the set he had Birdy sussed and was playing very well.  But as Andy himself said he failed to take his chances (as he did many times against Simon).  I got the impression from his post match interview that this is something he will be thinking about and no doubt discussing with Ivan.

Btw when does Ivan join him again?  Is it at or after Rome? Does anyone know?

Thanks for the report Luke and the link to the interview Elena.  Andy has said he is going in the right direction the last time he said something similar was after the defeat at Wimbledon and then went on to win an Olympic Gold........so fingers crossed!

Ruthie, the situation with Ivan is a bit of a mystery at the moment.Andy originally said that he would be in Madrid but not Rome-but seeing as Ivan didn't end up coming to Madrid,I'm wondering will we see him in Rome after all?  Think

I know it's no indication of what might happen this year, but in my head Lendl went to Rome last year. I'm almost sure he did. Either way, I'm sure he's in touch with Andy whether he's with him at a tournament or not. He seems the type who would be somehow.

Just a thought as well, nothing to do with the topic (me being random again lol) but isn't it Andy's 26th birthday on Wednesday?

Andy's turning 26, huh? That hurts a bit. Wish I could make him 22 again with all he has now.

I wouldn't worry EJ, in this era, and if Andy can stay relatively free of injury, I reckon he's got time. People talk about peak ages for players, but I don't know. I sometimes think Andy hasn't quite come into his own yet. I reckon the best is to come. Andy just wasn't quite ready at 22. I think he is now.

I had a feeling that Lendl was meeting up with him again the week before RG for a practice week but could be wrong.  Hope he will be in Rome though and hope Andy will have something to celebrate next week in addition to his birthday.  cmon yeah

Am watching the 1st set and I am at 4 all right now. Let me say that Andy was in no position to win that break point  he had in the first game, as Berdych served out wide and Andy barely returned the ball. It was a great serve from Berdy.

2nd, he played remarkably well to convert the only break-point he had at 3 all and to go up 4-3 so kudos to Andy.

However, while Andy played really well to try and save the game and to go up 5-3, he played 2 very bad points in succession to give away the game to Berdy. Judging by his reaction, he knew it too. But of course.

Also, every time he let Berdych dictate the point, Berdy went away with it. Something I had talked about before the match already. Against a very aggressive player like him, it's a giant mistake; however, Andy couldn't possibly dictate all the points.

Last thing, Andy doesn't like to slide and that compromises his movement as it doesn't allow him to retrieve all the balls that are somewhat out of his reach. And with that holding him slightly back, he doesn't feel neither as confident or comfortable on this surface. I do believe if he plays more and more, he'll get eventually get there. He basically needs to play a lot.

Anyway, great match so far though it hurts to know that Andy had already lost this match.

Andy couldn't have not converted the break point at 15-30 as it was a big serve from Berdych yet again; however, Andy missed a down the line backhand which would have given Andy 3 breakpoints in a row and a 0-40 lead. His chances to break Berdych would have been then much greater. Alas.

And just so you know and since I am at it anyway, he couldn't have possibly converted that 2nd serve at 30-40 either. It was a huge serve from Berdych again. Not at all Andy's fault for not converting it.

So Andy hits the 2nd serve slightly long after creating ad opportunity for himself. Now here you can say he wasted an opportunity and perhaps he could have been slightly careful with that return and let Berdy make the mistake since he was desperate to hold his serve.
