Great report, Clydey.
Not sure whether this match will help or hinder him from now on. On the one hand, he's come through a battle and should take confidence from that. On the other, he looked pretty drained at the end there - I hope he hasn't used up too much mental energy tonight, as physically at least, it shouldn't be a problem.
Didn't expect it to be quite so hard. From the way he started the match, the nerves and pressure is clearly getting to him. The BBC don't help with that stupid f**king on-court interview at the end. FFS, the guy has literally just finished a 4 hour battle, how helpful do you think it is to shove a camera and microphone in his face courtside and ask if he's going to dream of winning Wimbledon tonight. F**k off, Beeb...
I fancy him to beat Ferrero in 4 at the most, which should help to calm him down after tonight. Federer would annihiliate him in a potential final if he starts as nervously as he did tonight though.
I agree with all that Joe - I too was wondering if he was going to increase in confidence because he won such a tough match or lose confidence because he knew how lucky he was to just scrape through! I'd like to know the answer to that question.

so he was clearly not happy about playing under the roof, knew they had to be a reason why he came out so flat.

Which is strange, considering Murray is arguably the best player out there when it comes to playing indoors.
Listen to this muppet, sums up some of the stuffed shirts that are in British tennis for me.

'Wimbledon once again leading the way'. Is that so? Considering it is the second GS to have stadia with a roof, and the third of the GSs to play well into the night.
And dismissing Murray's reservations on the roof as 'player talk'.

I'm not even going to follow that link, I've almost reached saturation point with the number of clueless muppets and Murray haters over the last week and a bit.
His complaints about the roof do seem a little odd, but I think he's speaking genuinely because he got the win. If he'd lost, then it could be seen as an excuse, but he won and still decided to voice these opinions.
When you go into a tournament expecting it to be outdoors, I guess a sudden unexpected shift to indoors will take some adjustment. Doesn't account for the way he dipped in the 4th set though, as he looked to have adjusted by that point. I pray to Science that he gets his head together again today, don't want a repeat of the Nadal match last year when he was mentally shattered. He's dealt with the physical side over the last 12 months, now we'll see if he's really got his brain sorted.

They'll put him last on Centre for the QF, meaning he has today and most of tomorrow to recuperate and re-focus.

Stan is a very good player, top 10 on a good day, he said he played one of his best matches and he still came up short. I thought the humidity was supposed to be controlled when the roof was on, I can't remember the last time I saw Andy so wet, did you see him toss his used T-shirt into the audience at the end I don't know that I would have wanted to catch that one. At least he might have an advantage over the next player he has under the roof. His serve wasn't firing the way it was in the first few matches but everyones allowed an off day hopefully full service will be resumed in the next few matches.

It was bloody tough to get that posted.
What a match. I'm a wreck.
It's a super report, James. Many thanks for all your efforts. I'm still ragged after the match. I have never seen Andy quite so emotional about a match either - it was raw. Underneath the cool, calm reserve this tourney means a great deal to him and I'm sure he'll win it one day, even if this year may not be his year. We'll just have to wait and see.

In his own comments does he not give the reasons for his reservations concerning the roof. He said it made the balls very very heavy and affected his serve on occasion. Also how humid it was, that he felt he'd come out of a bath. He's used to playing in heat and the Yoga accimatises him to most heat-ridden conditions. He just wasn't expecting to play and indoor match on grass and it took him time to get used to it. Stan didn't seem to be affected though. The fact that Andy won eventually says a lot for his powers of recovery, even if he wasn't playing his best.

The All England Club's chief exec, Ian Ritchie, has explained the roof being closed despite the clear weather outside:
"We were always going to face ticklish decisions with the roof and the condition but you have to play the percentages. We had a forecast that said 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms, and we had a 6.30pm start meaning there was a reasonable chance the match might run into light problems. Take those together and that's why we decided to do it. It was the right decision."
Fair enough about the chance of rain, but is he saying that the roof has to be closed for the lights to come on? Seems ridiculous to me. Does it mean that any match that gets on a little late, even if there are clear skies, will have the roof closed to provide light and allow it to finish? Surely you can get floodlights going with an open roof? Anyone playing last on centre from now on, if the earlier matches go the distance, will be playing an indoor tourney for a round or two.

Jeez!! I'm still tired from that.
Andy came out on top though.

I just want to know y there was an on-court interview after the match.
Any special reasons?
I think they felt it was more appropriate to do it by the side of the court rather than in a room on the way back to the locker room. It's a good idea though.

A side question - does the roof have to be closed for the floodlights to be used?
I'm sure the floodlights are part of the roof's structure so they can't be used seperately, which is a shame.

Just added the post-match comments to the report - seems Andy really wasn't happy about the roof, wanted a bit more notice. Not sure how much more notice could have been given though... did he assume that they would reopen the roof after the Safina-Mauresmo match?
He probably did. The dip in the 4th was probably a concentration/focus lapse.

Thanks for the write up...I gave up trying to comment last night, which says something about our response to the match!
I was annoyed at the BBC with the interview, its unfair to single his matches out like that for oncourt interviews, especially since that has only ever happened on finals! He was shattered and they made him talk THEN??
It was as bad as watching Henman play again- years are off my life and I'm sure I woke my neighbours shouting
Think I'm going to avoid reading the papers on the match -he'll either be a god or awful because it was so tight - forgetting that Wawrinka's a brilliant player and holds an Olympic gold, all be it in doubles.
-Someone asked if the roof needed to be on for the floodlights - yes seems to be the implication, as they said the roof might be put on for matches that might last well into the evening.
Well now there's Ferrero - looking forward to it as he is a great player and I'm glad he's got this far...though hoping he doesn't go further!

I was sort of confused when seeing that on-court interview.
As far as I remembered, the officials broke their own tradition for only one time to honour Agassi.
Agassi's last Wimbledon match.
So last night was pretty weird. better hav good reasons.

Does anyone else feel Andy is being given a hard time by the consistent late starts? Seems Wimbledon is playing into Federer's hands: he just turns up at 2 o'clock, finished by 4.30, no disruption to his day and an early night. Gary Richardson should have been dumped by the BBC years ago: the man cannot interview, asks inane questions, which he also answers before letting his intervievee speak.

As far as the lighting goes - in one of the Telegraph interviews today it states ....appeared to struggle with the spotlights suspended in the roof that illuminate the court'. Later in this article Ian Ritchie, All England Club Chief Exec, stated asa reason for leaving the roof closed: 'We had a forecast of 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms and we had a 6.30 pm start meaning there was a chance the match might run in to light problems.' It looks as though the lights are integral with the roof and so can only operate when the roof is closed.
