It probably is because the sciatic nerve passes through the gluteal muscles.  However with full-blown sciatica the pain is excruciating and is usually accompanied by weakness in the affected leg.  Walking and even sitting are very difficult and Andy sounded too optimistic for it to be that serious, so hopefully it really is a minor problem which can be sorted out fairly quickly.

UPDATE: Just looked at the Andy at Paris Masters thread where a video has been posted which shows Andy in Paris and already on court practising, so that's encouraging! Smile

Will you post the link please, can't find it?

I'm getting much better at shrugging off Sir Smug's snidy comments about Andy but this one is a cracker:

"Federer feels the players who have pulled out this week perhaps have one eye on the end of season championships and questioned whether Murray and the others would have withdrawn had they been playing at a tournament with significantly higher stakes.

'If it had been the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, would Murray have played?  Maybe.  I just figured that these are injuries that are just too dangerous to take a chance on and it's smart not to be playing when you don't feel like it's not going to work out to have a chance to win the tournament.'"

Does he really think Andy, having asked for a wild card for the singles and doubles, would have pulled out if there was any possibility of him playing - letting everyone, including his brother, down?  He really doesn't like our boy, does he?  Perhaps these comments were designed to cover Fed's huge sigh of relief!!!

Just seen Miles Mc is now coaching Baggy, who has taken a set off Novak.
Gets around doesn't he?

Don't know if anyone has seen this.  Interview with Andy in Basel/Basle after pulling out of tournament:

Only just caught up with this.  Not only encouraging but also shows Andy's thoughtful side - apologetic about letting people down but also thinking about the person who can take his place. Good on him when he must have been feeling pretty disappointed.  It's good news that he's out practising already in Paris.

I'd like to be impartial, but I can't!

I think that FEDs was a bit peeved at murray getting wild card at Basle, had murray stayed in competition then Federer would have lost more points cause he would have lost to murray and therefore not get through to the final where he won last year.

He never has liked murray really, cause murray has the game to beat him and has done for a long time. Federer has been lucky that because of the rankings murray always met Nadal, rather than Feds

I agree - Fed is very lucky not to have had to face Andy more often than he has.

He also commented on Andy's wild card by saying, "The schedule cannot be too long when Murray asked for a wildcard. I think he's not quite sure what he wants."

The last I checked Andy had only played 3 x 500 tournaments. I'm guessing that was the reason for the wild card. Perhaps Fed should check his facts or the ATP rulebook before he comments on his fellow professional.

Methinks he's miffed that Andy took his ranking and then had the audacity to turn up in Switzerland.

Spot on IonaRed.     He's so petty and waspish now I think he'd be doing himself a favour if he retired.    He's not fit to lace Andy's trainers!!!!

I totally agree, Andy has got him rattled big time. Didn't RF pull out of Shanghai a couple of weeks back citing fatigue as the reason? The man has no class. It sickens me the way the tennis media fawns over this guy, great player yes, great sportsman definitely NOT!! He still hasn't got over the way Andy knocked him out of the tour finals in Shanghai 3 years ago when Andy had already qualified for the semis. He behaved like a real drama queen that day too disrupting the flow of the game to tend to his 'back injury'. Worst of all were his comments after Berdych knocked him out of Wimbledon last year, he rolled out the excuses that day too when a real class act would have praised Berdych for playing one of the games of his life. Tosser.

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

I like that idea. Very Happy  I bet Fed is thanking his lucky stars that Andy has withdrawn.  However, he had absolutely no need to make any comment about this and I'm sick of hm being constantly deferred to by the media for his opinions.  Fed is no longer king, and they should accept that.

So the inference is that Andy turned up in Basel, went through the usual tournament preparations, then decided to pull out citing an injury because, no, he hadn't really wanted to play in the first place?  And Jamie just came along for the ride?   Get real, Roger!

As for saying that Andy might have played had it been the Wimbledon QF, it's obvious that Federer has never sustained that type of injury otherwise he wouldn't have made such a crass comment.  I've had the same thing, and, so it seems, have a few others on this forum.  It's very painful and it's disabling.  Andy would have been gutted but I firmly believe that it wouldn't have been a case of "maybe" but "unable to" because his mobility would have been seriously resticted.  He might just have given it a try but would probably have been forced to retire after a few games.

I've only one thing to say to Mr Arrogance, and that is - retire while you've still got any credibility left!!
