Andy Murray has withdrawn from the French Open after seeking specialist advice on the back injury picked up in Rome. It is believed that this is a recurrence of the same injury that hindered his 2012 clay court season.

The Brit admitted it was a 'really tough decision' and has expressed his disappointment, but says he is not fit to compete in the French capital. He is now looking ahead to the grass court season in three weeks time.

It's a really tough decision and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice, I am not fit to compete. Apologies to the organisers and thanks to everyone for the messages of support. Now my complete focus is on getting back on the court as soon as possible.

This will be the first grand slam Murray has missed since Wimbledon 2007.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

The French open is my least favourite slam as it is, so with Andy not playing, that's any interest i had in watching out the window, roll on Queens

So sad for Andy and for all of his fans. I really hope the back problem gets sorted out ASAP. I wonder if he's considering having a spine surgery because that will need a lot of time for recovery and rehab. The thought of him pulling a Nadal 2012 stunt is unbearable.

Whilst I'm very sorry that Andy has had to pull out, it won't stop me taking an interest in the tournament, especially as it's a Slam.

I enjoy tennis and there are other players I'll be supporting - Dimitrov, Tsonga, Ferrer and Del Potro (although his participation too is in doubt).  Also, thanks to ITV, RG is one of the very few occasions where I have the luxury of watching tennis on TV as opposed to sometimes inferior and unreliable livestreams.

I think there is the possibility that Andy was always intending to skip the French Open and did that whole enter Rome and quit thing to prevent people being so critical about it.

Like Aileen, it'll be a treat to watch tennis on tv for a change, so I'll be watching when I can, even though it won't hold the same level of interest with Andy not playing. I'm so relieved he's not though, but I just hope 3 weeks will be enough, as I'd hate him to miss the grass season! Get well soon Andy!   hug

Right call I think, queens Wimbeldon and USO , much more important, but upper most is Andys health and well being , but it won't be the same without him. all we need is smug fed to go out early so Andy stays ahead in the ranking points.  yay

Must be the right decision even though a GS without andy feels like Hamlet without the prince (and if he had played I'd have been so anxious about what it might do to his back I'd not have been able to enjoy watching him anyway).  I just hope the extra rest and the fact that grass is much kinder to his back mean that he'll be ok for Queens and more importantly Wimbledon.   Heard Jonathan O on radio earlier and he was suggesting if the back was really bad he'd have decided sooner and that the fact he took advice from 2 specialists suggests this is as much precautionary as anything.  Hope he's right.   JO agrees it's the wise decision and I hope the rest of the media are equally supportive.  It's also good that we were told when Andy would make the decision and we weren't left in the dark guessing this time.
