Also why has Federer not been playing in the last two tournaments no one has been asking  why and we do not know why. Perhaps he was injured, nothing is ever men entioned. It is always Murray and the papers  get nasty.

It was reliably reported that Federer was giving his body a rest and was then planning to train briefly in the US with a clay-court specialist coach in preparation for RG.

Everyone has to play the Masters unless they have a genuine injury.

Monte Carlo wasn't a mandatory Masters so that's why Federer skipped it. He's also able to skip one of the mandatory Masters throughout the year due to playing over 600 matches. I think he didn't want to overplay on clay (where he's never going to be a favourite for RG if he meets Rafa) but wants to be fresh for all the big events over the summer.

Thanks for the additional info about Federer.

I know MC isn't mandatory, which begs the question that, if Andy's back problem has been an ongoing thing, then why didn't he skip that tournament and Barcelona as well if necessary.  Either he's been a bit careless (which would surprise me, given how protective he is of his body) or the injury did in fact occur in Barcelona.  Certainly before the Raonic match there was no sign of any obvious problem.  In fact in his first two matches in Barcelona his movement round the court was very good.

Yes ,his movement round the court was good in barcelona.  I think it occurred in the Raonic match, perhaps he felt he had to increase his power on serve and has pulled a mucle. Anyway lets hope he will be fit for Rome and RG. He had an anke injury at RG last year and played with that, so he is not one to pull out of an event unless there is a good reason.

Feel a bit guilty now about having my earlier doubts, which were a knee-jerk reaction to the news, probably because I'm as anxious as anyone in case this turns out to be something which could scupper Andy's chances in RG.  If he's been told that rest is the important thing, then it does sound as though it could be a muscle problem.  Unfortunately it also means that he probably wont get much practice before Rome.  He does seem to be so unfortunate when it comes to picking up injuries.

Aileen, they all pick up loads of injuries, except Feddybear it seems, and possibly Nole, though he has had shoulder problems which surfaced end of last year.
It's just we all home in on Andy's.

Feddybear ... lol  I think you're right though BBH.  After all there are players pulling out of tournaments all the time because of niggling injuries which are probably only of concern to their fans.

I think Nole's shoulder problem was there for quite a long time last year; he just managed to play through it.  But when he took his shirt off he had some kind of support on.  I'm sure Andy is being wise not to aggravate whatever the problem is with his back and give it whatever rest he needs.  But like Aileen I fear that he'll arrive in Rome and also RG with too little match practice on the clay, having not really had that much on the US hard courts.

I would not worry too much. It is all mental with Andy he will be fine. He will be keeping fit and doing a little practice. He will be fine. rested and ready to go. That is important with the coming events. i think there could be injuries on this clay court in Madrid. If Nadal says it is slippery etc it must be.

Del Potro has won Estoril Open.

Andy certainly needs to avoid Del Potro, Berdych, Raonic , to name a few, if he is to keep his run of Semi appearances in Slams going.

Im just watching a rerun of Andy versus Berdych in Dubai this year. Andy is 3-0 up and won the first 7 points. Its amazing how easy it is for Andy versus Berdych on a fast hard court as against a slow clay court. Its a completely different match.

I disagree, he enjoys playing the better player. Raonic was just on song lets see how he gets on with federer if he gets through. against ferrer he was a lesser player.

Sometimes it is just how you feel they are all human like you and I.

I think when it comes to slams, Andy will put his game face on and won't have the same lapses as MC and Barcelona. There's no guarantees Raonic, Berdy and Delpo would get that far to face Andy.

Perhaps it's just precaution to pull out but then again, a lot of people don't seem to like the blue clay saying it's got a bad bounce and is quite slippery so injuries to Monaco and Bennetau is bound to play on the minds of players still.

No one wants to risk serious injury before RG.

I'm sure he will be fine for Rome & RG. The most important thing is he is fully fit for the grass season & US Open series.
