Andy Murray is through to the third round of the Western & Southern Open after beating David Nalbandian, 6-4 6-1.

The fourth seed gave an average but sufficient performance to get back to winning ways after a shock defeat in his opening match in Montreal.

I felt tight early on today. Obviously I want to start playing my best tennis but the most important thing right now is to try and get as many matches as possible before the US Open.

I didn't want to have another first-round loss. I stayed calmer towards the end of the first set when I started to move a little bit better but earlier on I was definitely tight and that is something I'm trying to work on and stay a little bit more composed.

Murray will now face Alex Bogomolov Jr in round three.

Tsonga has just lost in straight sets, so Bogomolov it is and Boggy has a 1-0 H2H lead over Andy, winning in straight sets earlier this year, so his tail is going to be up! Rolling Eyes

OMG. Andy's performance (talking about the 1st set) was abysmal. Howerver, He won in the end  cmon yeah

Bring on the American Bogomolov Jr. the rankings charts haven't changed much but when they do I'll pppppost them, hoping that by doing so Andy will be on a winning streak!

Here's Andy's take on it from BBC website:
"I felt tight early on today," said Murray, who lost to Bogomolov Jr in Miami in March. "Obviously I want to start playing my best tennis but the most important thing right now is to try and get as many matches as possible before the US Open.

"I didn't want to have another first-round loss. I stayed calmer towards the end of the first set when I started to move a little bit better but earlier on I was definitely tight and that is something I'm trying to work on and stay a little bit more composed.

"That also comes with playing more matches and hopefully I'll get a few more this week."

I don't think I'll bother to watch the first set but sounds like might be worth watching the 2nd having just got in.  Anyway, well done Andy as winning ugly is what it's about sometimes.  And he must have had at back of his mind what happened earlier in the year in US.

I noticed that Darren Cahill was among the spectators at Andy's match. Does this convey positive portents for the future Murray / Cahill relationship?

Not sure you can read anything into that but would be good if so.  Andy gave himself 5 out of 10 apparently for his performance.

From Yahoo:-

Murray beat Nalbandian for the third consecutive time after losing the first two career matches against the Argentinian.

Murray easily advanced to the third round where he will face American Alex Bogomolov who beat Jo-Winfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4.

"I was definitely better today," Murray said. "I need to try and keep that up for the next match and hopefully play just five percent, 10 percent better tomorrow than I did today. I'll be happy with that."

Murray broke Nalbandian's serve six times and fired five aces, spending just 77 minutes on the court.

"I took quite a long break after Wimbledon and obviously played pretty poorly last week, so wanted to up my game and hopefully get a few matches this week and try and go all the way here if I can," Murray said. "And hopefully I play my best tennis at the US Open. That's the end goal."

Well, I think he was pretty poor in the first set, tight, rusty etc but I thought he was pretty good in the second, with lots of reminders of his magic.
Bevc, u mentioned serving stats. I read somewhere in the first set they were both in the thirties. I cannot believe Nalby served better, his serving looked awful. He had far more double faults for a start.

Thanks Bev! I do feel fairly confident that Andy will win today! I don't think anyone should read too much into this guy beating Tsonga yesterday, as it sounds as though Tsonga wasn't playing his best! Could be, he does have an 'iffy' shoulder!

More like a FEW reminders of his magic.  I now rarely find myself saying "OMG, how did he get that back".  Sadly, his recent play rarely excites me and I've found myself doing the crossword or bringing in the washing whilst his match is on.  I used to be totally glued to the screen, but not any more.  Bored and disappointed.  Djokovic's current form makes others look pedestrian.  Here's hoping for improvements.

Unfortunately, most of what you have written is true. However, for whatever reasons Andy is not reaching the heights he once achieved. All we can do is keep believing.

Too often he mirrors his opponents, whereas he should be giving the lesser mortals a master class every time in order to maintain the highest standard required to beat the best.  Too many first serves missed, double faults and poorly judged drop shots.  Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy, but at least he's got the haircut right <vbg>
