Andy Murray went out of the Australian Open with a whimper on Tuesday as Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela strolled to a 6-1 6-3 6-3 first-round win.
That has to be one of the most painful matches I've ever watched. I dont think I've seen a televised match where Andy has played so poorly, since he played Johnny Mac at The Royal Albert Hall a couple of years ago.

Murray was facing a higher ranked and far more experienced player and Chela began well, dominating with his big forehand and breaking immediately.

But it was the catalogue of unforced errors from Murray that decided the match as he failed to find any rhythm.

A hugely frustrating day got the better of Murray when he was warned for racquet abuse but it did nothing to change the momentum and Chela wrapped up the win with little fuss.

Three break points went begging as Murray lost in under two hours.

Woke up just in time to hear the sports round up on the radio - Johnny Overend says hes never seen Andy play so badly and Andy himself described it as 'silly tennis'.  no
Then heard a clip from the press conference when Andy was blaming the press for putting pressure on him. Not good.

Quote
"If you guys expect me to play well every single match and every single tournament then it's not going to happen," said Murray.

"Everybody has a bad tournament sometime. Unfortunately, it came here.

"But I'm going to have much better days than this one, and I'm sure I'll have worse days.

"You guys (the media) are expecting me to win matches like this. The guy's ranked 20 places in front of me, he is a much better player than me."

And there was more that the bbc didnt include...

But anyway.....onwards and upwards.....Wink

I fear it is far too early days for him to start 'blaming' the press for expecting too much.  Just about all the press I have read leading up to the Aussie Open (from posts here and elsewhere) has been fair.  Let's just put it down to a very off day and hope for much better things next match.

im not complaining if he has a siege mentality about the press.it seemed to work for him last year.i actually think he has a fair point as well cos the game was built up in a lot of places as if he should win it easily

interesting bit at the end tho wher he did get a bit annoyed.some guy said he didnt think there was much pressure on him and andy was obv wanting to say that was a load of rubbish but said they would have to agree to disagree and maybe he should just forget about it.he handles himself very impressively with the press for a guy his age.im a few months older than him and theres no way i could do something like that

Iain, I'm a lot more than a few years older than Andy and I would have wanted to throttle him, I can not keep my temper under control at all.  ranting

lol.on very rare occasions im the same.i can normally be civil to ppl but if its something thats been annoying me AND other people and the persons just being selfish thats the only times (since i was a child anyway) that i have been known to get really annoyed.thereve been a couple of times when i was at school that we were working in a chamber music group for about a year quite intensively and one person would irritate ppl and i would start shouting at them and telling them what ppl actually thought generally disturbing the entire music department and making a bit of a fool of myself but the other ppl did get the point

This is a very minor point but I think the quote by Hulahoop on the first post was unfair.  First of all it was at Wembley Wink , not the Albert Hall.  Tim was meant to be playing in the tournament but had to withdraw through injury, so Andy was last minute replacement.  He had only just won the US Open juniors and it was very much man against boy.
