Andy has played Doha in the past. didn't he choose to come straight from Miami to Oz last year? Wasn't so dusty at AO then was he? I can think of many advantages, acclimatisation, less flying etc.
Perhaps Cahill preferred to be here, who knows? Also, it has worked really well as he is meeting up with Lendl this weekend. 
As far as the media is concerned, haven't we realised that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't?  I bite my thumb at them!

I took it as a warm up event for AO from the start, not reading much into it from the get go. But press is not being too nice to him in this one.
Speaking of his 2012 plans and preparations in the lead up to the AO, Andy said (late) last year he would change tactics. Therefore, he would not play Hopman, rather go to Brizzy to get sharper competion (Hopman being more friendly and less stress) and he believed Brisbane would be better conditioning before AO.

Andy also said it was important for to get to Australia sooner rather than later because of jet lag and aclimatisation to the hot/humid conditions.

This seems sensible,  and again it shows he is willing to change his usual rutines by trying new ways in his quest for higher goals.

We must get behind him whatever the outcome of Brizzy.
The media are just (always) waiting to fell him at the first opportunity. They love to write him off as a Grand slam candidate cmonandy

Happy New Year! I missed you after the World Finals, were you on sabbatical?
Just gettting my feet in the water after a couple of weeks in France...hard coming back to Portugal. It'd be a good place without all the Portuguese to bother you!

As far as the media is concerned, haven't we realised that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't?  I bite my thumb at them!
Not only will Cahill have his commentating duties for ESPN at the AO but he's also an Aussie, so probably a good time to go visit family and friends there.

Not sure if this thread is the correct place to announce this, but as one has not been started yet on this, for those of you who do not already know it our Andy has just given Marcos a mauling 6-2 6-2 to go into the semis. According to initial reports our Andy came out of the blocks flying playing truly  composed aggressive tennis, dismantling Marcos's game in little over an hour. Also interestingly, there is a question being posted on the Sky sports website about whether our Andy will be number one this year. It is in relation to an interview he obviously gave to them about his ambitions for this year. What i found really interesting was that 67% of respondents thought that he would become world number one this year versus 33%  of respopndents who thought he would not. What do MW members think?   Whistle

wow really? hmmm that is very interesting  w00t   Im sure that Andy might be able to get that number 3 spot back this year.. but number 1 is a bit out of reach.. hopefully number 1 will be in the near future sometime.. maybe 3 or 2 years.  Cmon Andy! Smile

Nothing wrong with Andy or his fans having high aspirations but this is not realistic in a one-year mammoth leap? Surely he needs to achieve a clear and steady no. 3 and then become no.  2 first?

I'd love it to happen but there are several obsticles in his path.

It is possible considering the points Joker has to protect. If you divide the matchs between, Nadal, Roger, and Andy hitting Joker on all points...he could do it. BUT....he has to take it to all of them everytime he plays! Consider it may go back and forth a bit, but year end #1 is a bit of a stretch for the moment.

Difficult but I find it encouraging that sky respondents believed he could because he doesn't usually seem to be very popular among sky viewers.
Been away a couple of days but heard the good news re the Baggy match on the radio with Neil Harman of Times saying Andy played really well.  Perhaps he's finally shaken off the ring rust and found his rhythm and shots.  Looking forward to watching the match online when  I get the chance especially as also a Baggy fan (though of course a long way after our Andy).

I don't think I've heard Andy say his ambition was to become No.1 by the end of this year, but merely that it was one of his goals.  Unfortunately, if he is to achieve it, then I think his other goal - a GS - has to be achieved first, although as Buhweet says, touching on it briefly isn't totally beyond the realms of possibility.  Federer is past his best, Nadal is crumbling mentally and physically, and there has to be a big question mark over Djokovic's ability to defend all, or even the majority of, his titles given that his successes in 2011 took their toll on his body - his right shoulder, for example, has been a problem since the USO, and that being the case, how well will it stand up to playing constantly at the same level of intensity that he did last year?

However, if we stop focussing on the Big Three (hate that expression - sounds like a political triumverate), then there is the small matter of Del Potro who has being quietly making swift progress up the rankings following his return from injury, and who is now knocking on the door of the top ten.  If he can remain healthy and get back the form that saw him win the USO in 2009, then I can see him in the top five this year.

If his game comes together well, he certainly could finish number 1. If he can pull out his top draw stuff more consistently in the big matches. Djokovic did it last year with not many thinking he would. Andy could do the same this year or next... We've all learnt he's a hard one to predict though!

Quite honestly, I don't think Andy would want to wreck his body the way Djokovic has in the pursuit of his ambitions, and he seems to be injury-prone enough as it is.  If all goes well though I think a more realistic No.2 could be on the cards.
