ANDY MURRAY ARRIVES IN ABU DHABI A NEW MAN [Sport 360, 26 Dec]

..... Four years ago, we were treated to a phenomenal final between Murray and Nadal, which the Scot eventually won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Hopes of that rematch at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City were dashed after Nadal’s withdrawal with a stomach virus.

But should Murray get past world No9 Janko Tipsarevic, a final showdown with Djokovic is still on the cards to whet the appetite of those watching in Abu Dhabi.

But the Murray who will kick-off proceedings on Thursday is not the same player who wowed the UAE crowd in 2008. He is stronger, faster, and armed with confidence like he’s never had before now that he’s an Olympic and Grand Slam champion.

The 25-year-old says his exploits in 2012 have changed the way he feels about himself. “I find it easier to walk around with my head up, whereas, before I was always head down, not wanting anyone to see me or say anything,” says Murray, who comes to Abu Dhabi fresh off an intense training period in Miami.

“Maybe I felt that having lost in Grand Slam finals I was letting whoever it was down. I know I had been reminded every day for the last six years that it’s this long since someone from our country won a Slam.

“So there was part of me probably that felt a little bit of responsibility. It’s nice not to have worry about that anymore and see what else I can achieve. Since the Olympics I just feel a bit better about myself.”

Murray believes the MWTC can give him some much-needed preparation for the Australian Open, and is happy to commence his season in Abu Dhabi. He says: “It’s a good way to start the year. You’re practising against the best players in the world.

“The guys that played there the last few years have gone on to be very successful in Australia as well. So I think before you start playing tournaments, it just gives you a little bit of extra sharpness because you’re playing against the best players.”.....

Nicholas Almagro is to step in to replace Rafa. Good they found someone at short notice!
There are conflicting starting times given by Stream Hunter- 15:00 but on Mubadala website they state 17:00. We'd better be careful not to miss the match!
There's a 4 hr time difference for me, so whatever the case, it's not a bad time of day.

Maybe not a good time for our Antipodian friends though? Bev? Tomthoms?
Good news that they got Almagro.

13:00 it is.  If you set the little time zone box in the top RH corner beside the date to GMT+0 you'll get that.  I discovered a while ago that it automatically defaults to GMT+2, hence the confusion.  Still not very good for Bev and Tomthoms though because it'll be 2 am in NZ.

It's highlights of his whole US Open campaign with interviews during the tournament and an overview from the narrator.
Is that the thing on SS4 on Thursday or what was shown yesterday?

(Or is the thing tomorrow a repeat?)

Thanks for the link, I just read it now. Isn't it sad about Rafa, the poor guy? It's hard to know if he's been so unlucky contracting a stomach virus, but it's very common in winter. He was wise to begin his return at lesser important tournay than a major, pity it didnt work out for him.
Yes, that awful Novovirus is sweeping the UK at the moment.  I picked it up once and have never been so sick in my entire life.  However I think it might be better if Rafa can play Doha rather than come up against a top ten player (hopefully Andy) in his first match.

I can do that if you like.  I haven't watched it yet so I'll copy it when I do and stick it up (if no-one else has).
I'd really be grateful for that Taz.D. Super!
I've just received a response from Craig and he's agreed to do it. Smile  Thanks very much for your offer though Tas.  I expect it'll go on the Murray Videos thread.

Now all we need is somebody to put it on YouTube.

Linda - if you can't get Sky and in case no-one puts it on YouTube/MW, then you might find this very interesting.  It's an article in which the players themselves, pundits, umpires and coaches look back on Andy Murray’s victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.  I did post it on the News Articles thread but it seems to have gone largely unnoticed in all the Christmas festivities.

I've had a good Christmas, thanks - on my own out of choice, so a very quiet day with one or two festive treats.  Hope you had an enjoyable one.  Meanwhile I haven't heard from Craig but he may yet get back to me.

Wel I have sent Craig a PM so am awaiting his response, although he's just arrived back home in Scotland from the US where he works so is probably immersed in his family and festive celebrations at the moment, so whether he'll read it or not before the 28th remains to be seen.  However there are others who are capable of doing this, so here's hoping!
Good thinking Aileen. I hope you're having a nice Christmas, by the way?

Oh great!  Now all we need is somebody to put it on YouTube.  I tried to see if it might be available on Sky Player, but a sub is needed before you can even access the website.

I am very disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year in Abu Dhabi. I was really excited about returning to play and I always have a wonderful experience at the event and this is the first time I will miss the tournament.

My rehab has gone well, my knee feels good and I was looking forward to competing. Unfortunately doctors have informed me that my body needs to rest in order to fight this stomach virus. I would like to say sorry to all my fans in the United Arab Emirates and around the world, but I hope to play and win in Abu Dhabi again next year.

Official announcement on the tournament website -

MUBADALA WORLD TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 PLAYER UPDATE, December 25, 2012

World number four and two-time Mubadala World Tennis Championship winner Rafael Nadal has been forced to make a last minute withdrawal from the 2012 event due to a stomach virus. Nadal, who has competed in all four previous tournaments, was advised by doctors not to travel or compete due to the illness.

The Spanish star was due to return to action in Abu Dhabi for the first time since this year’s Wimbledon Championship alongside defending Mubadala World Tennis Champion and world number one Novak Djokovic, reigning US Open Champion and world number three Andy Murray, world number five David Ferrer, world number six Tomas Berdych and world number nine Janko Tipsarevic.

Speaking following his withdrawal Nadal said ..... [see above]

Tournament organisers IMG have confirmed that Nadal will be replaced in the all-star line-up in the championship at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, Zayed Sports City, 27th-29th December. The new player to be named in the all-star line-up will be made in advance of the tournament starting on 27th December.

It'll be interesting to see who they get at such short notice.  Meanwhile I'm not surprised given that only the other day Nadal was reported as saying how nervous he was about how his knee would hold up as the injury apparently still hasn't healed properly - but there have been so many rumours flying around about his knee and a return to competitive tennis that it's difficult to know exactly what the truth is.  I sincerely hope though for his sake that it really is a virus, unpleasant as that is, and not just a cover-up excuse.
