Murray to star in Abu Dhabi
« on: December 20, 2012, 12:51 PM »
Andy Murray is set to play in the
Mubadala World Tennis Championship
exhibition tournament for the first time since the tournament's inauguration in 2009, where two time champion Rafael Nadal is hoping to make his return to the sport. Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic also feature.
The tournament runs from the 27th to the 29th of December and finishes two days prior to the start of the new tennis season. Due to a mix up with the seeding, the US Open champion finds himself seeded third and will face Janko Tipsarevic in the first round on Wednesday 27th December at 5pm local time. The winner will face Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
Although only an exhibition tournament, and thus no ranking points on offer, it is still expected that the players will be looking to take this tournament seriously with the new season lurking just around the corner.

Is it the first time Luke? I remember he played in something similar I think it was 3 years ago and won it but perhaps it was a different exhibition tournament in same part of the world? It had the top players I remember.

I'm looking forward to see Nadal back in action - purely to see how he performs after his six month lay-off. An Andy/Rafa match should be very interesting, if Andy beats Tipsy.
Btw - Abu Dhabi is GMT+4, so 5 pm=1 pm here.

I can't see how Andy is going to manage in Brisbane just a few days later, especially if he gets to the final, because he faces a 15 hour flight and also Brisbane is 6 hrs ahead of AD. But

1st Round he'll get a bye anyway.

Oh yeah, that's changed from previous years then.
He shouldn't start 'til Wednesday then, maybe Thursday. Abu Dhabi finishes on Saturday so he'll be in Brisbane by Monday at latest. Jet lag shouldn't be much of a problem (it's just one flight, albeit a long one) and he'll have a day or two to prepare (although hopefully he'll already be in game mode after AD).
First match will be the real test. Hopefully he avoids the likes of Hewitt.

My bad. I thought Lower level tournaments the top seeds always got a 1st round bye or is that just in 500 and 1000 level tournaments?

Rusty is hungry to play Andy, and says he is fully fit for the first time in a long time.

He's had problems with jetlag in the past, but I guess he knows best! I see that Raonic is playing as well - another one to be avoided.
Any idea when the draw will take place?
