Lamento mucho no poder competir este año en Abu Dhabi. Todo estaba preparado y tengo muchas ganas de volver a la competición pero los médicos me han prohibido competir en Abu Dhabi por una infección estomacal que me ha producido fiebre.

En Abu Dhabi siempre me han tratado muy bien y esta es la primera vez que no puedo competir en ese torneo. Mi recuperación ha ido bien, mis rodillas se encuentran mejor y como digo tenía muchas ganas de volver a la competición. Lo siento por mis fans en los Emiratos y en todo el mundo. Espero poder estar allí el año que viene.

I am very disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year in Abu Dhabi. I was really excited about returning to play and I always have a wonderful experience at the event and this is the first time I will miss the tournament.

My rehab has gone well, my knee feels good and I was looking forward to competing. Unfortunately doctors have informed me that my body needs to rest in order to fight this stomach virus. I would like to say sorry to all my fans in the United Arab Emirates and around the world, but I hope to play and win in Abu Dhabi again next year.

MUBADALA WORLD TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 PLAYER UPDATE, December 25, 2012

World number four and two-time Mubadala World Tennis Championship winner Rafael Nadal has been forced to make a last minute withdrawal from the 2012 event due to a stomach virus. Nadal, who has competed in all four previous tournaments, was advised by doctors not to travel or compete due to the illness.

The Spanish star was due to return to action in Abu Dhabi for the first time since this year’s Wimbledon Championship alongside defending Mubadala World Tennis Champion and world number one Novak Djokovic, reigning US Open Champion and world number three Andy Murray, world number five David Ferrer, world number six Tomas Berdych and world number nine Janko Tipsarevic.

Tournament organisers IMG have confirmed that Nadal will be replaced in the all-star line-up in the championship at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, Zayed Sports City, 27th-29th December. The new player to be named in the all-star line-up will be made in advance of the tournament starting on 27th December.



It'll be interesting to see who they get at such short notice.  Meanwhile I'm not surprised given that only the other day Nadal was reported as saying how nervous he was about how his knee would hold up as the injury apparently still hasn't healed properly - but there have been so many rumours flying around about his knee and a return to competitive tennis that it's difficult to know exactly what the truth is.  I sincerely hope though for his sake that it really is a virus, unpleasant as that is, and not just a cover-up excuse.

Hi all so pleased Andy came third in the BBC SPOTY well done to him for that.I like everybody else on MW cant wait for the new season to start.Have so missed the tennis.Been really ill myself with a chest infection for five weeks so have not even been posting on the forum,missed that as well.Thursday 27th at 8pm for those with sky there's a program AM US Open Champion,wether thats the actual match or not i cannot say.Its going to be on sky sports4 8pm until 10pm,if it is just the match itself im sorry for that as i know most of you will have seen that countless times and will be hoping for a bit more than a repeat of his win against ND.Hope you all have a merry christmas and a very happy new year.2013 is gonna be great.

Linda - if you can't get Sky and in case no-one puts it on YouTube/MW, then you might find this very interesting.  It's an article in which the players themselves, pundits, umpires and coaches look back on Andy Murray’s victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.  I did post it on the News Articles thread but it seems to have gone largely unnoticed in all the Christmas festivities.

Thanks for the link, I just read it now. Isn't it sad about Rafa, the poor guy? It's hard to know if he's been so unlucky contracting a stomach virus, but it's very common in winter. He was wise to begin his return at lesser important tournay than a major, pity it didnt work out for him.

Yes, that awful Novovirus is sweeping the UK at the moment.  I picked it up once and have never been so sick in my entire life.  However I think it might be better if Rafa can play Doha rather than come up against a top ten player (hopefully Andy) in his first match.
