The principle of what Federer is saying is right though. If you defend, you wait on mistakes. If those mistakes don't come, what can you do?

Well you can stop hitting first serves in at 40%, you can stop rolling in second serves at 80 mph, you can stop hitting forehands that land on service line and you can stop netting second serve returns like they were first serves coming from Karlovic. Defensive players play badly as well, the difference is they don't have an appauling UE count to justify they played awfully like aggresive players do.

No, he's not simply saying he feels comfortable. He's saying Andy has no say in whether he wins or loses in their match. In other words, he's taking away all credit from Andy for all his previous and future victories.

In many way's he's right - if Murray is playing his usual passive nonsense an on form Federer blows him away. Murray has shown bugger all inclination to do anything else, so that's a reasonable assertion for Fed to make.

Andy's in the toughest group. That will hopefully make him up his game. Smile

Who care what Rogers says. It's what actually happens on court that matters.

Federer, the so-called gentleman of tennis, yet again proving he has no manners, particularly in his rivalry with Andy.  How dare he dismiss Andy's skills with such disdain.  So, the six matches that Andy has won against him have been down to Federer 'letting him win'?  Surely the tennis and betting authorities should be looking into this state of affairs, if we are to believe him.   Personally, I believe Andy has won fair and square, so it is quite extraordinary that he comes out with these comments in Andy's own backyard.  He is supposed to be an outstanding ambassador for the sport and yet comes out with bitchy, unsportsmanlike dribble about Andy, who, only today, was showing superb respect for him, Nadal and the other guys.  Andy sure has rattled his cage, like no one else, it really is unbelievable for a guy as good as Federer to demean himself with such belittling remarks about a fellow professional.  Very unbecoming and very unmanly, let alone ungentlemanly.

Good posting!  It's incredible.  I know the guy has earned his stripes, and all that, but his head is so far up his own arse, it's not even funny.  Smile

Come on, be serious, do you really think Federer meant he let him win, as in he specially did it? It's quite obvious he means it was down to him not playing well that Andy won. Maybe not a nice thing to say, but definitely not what you think!

And see what Andrew (Sir Panda) said above to see what I'm sure he meant - not that Andy's not such a good player (Federer has said enough times - albeit not just after he's lost to him! - that he really respects Andy's play), but that because of Andy's style (i.e. defensive excellence, and waiting for his opponent to mess up) means it'll probably come down to Federer playing well or not.
Of course a player defending out of his mind may still beat someone playing brilliant attacking tennis, but most usually not, because however good defensively you are if your opponent just keeps hitting the lines shot after shot, you'll lose.

Yamor, you are giving him the benefit of the doubt, Federer does not deserve that from you given his previous arrogant and cocky comments.

When I read the quotes, there is very little room for misinterpretation, it seems completely clear what he means.

Are you serious, Mark? Do you really really think Fed means he let Murray win till now? That's what the comment above which I was replying to was saying!
Anyway, I don't think it's benefit of the doubt at all. It's the only good explanation I can see to the words he said.

I suppose Murray could probably say the same thing... if he played an attacking game, he would always beat Federer Very Happy
Yes, I agree. fed seems to be able to change his game in a way thst Andy hasn't yet mastered - and he needs to - soon.

I think it's clear that Federer is saying that it's completely down to him whether he wins or loses against Murray which means he is taking credit away from Murray's previous wins and future wins. No other way you can interpret his comments.

They are rude and arrogant.
