The Scot, who accepted the award from Martina Navratilova over video-link, made history in July
when he ended Britain's 77 year for a British male singles champion at Wimbledon. In a year hampered by injury he was also victorious in Miami and at Queens, as well as making the Australian Open final and leading Britain back into the World Group in the Davis Cup.
Welsh rugby starlet Leigh Halfpenny and horseracing legend A.P. McCoy came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Brit will now return to training in Miami ahead of his prospective comeback in Doha in two weeks time.
