It was because Federer needed the pace to feed off, he wasn't very good at all through-out the match at generating pace.

I'm still intrigued as to what was said after Murray went 15-0 at 6-5 (when he passed Federer). He pulled a funny face and had a bemused smile on his face, like "are you being serious?".
I think Federer was telling him that the ball was in (in some amusing way). It was straight on the line when he challenged.

Which ball? None of the shots in that rally were close the line IIRC.

I don't know exactly but I think it was about a disputed point from Federer it was originally out but the call was changed and Andy got the point. Also Federer did not seem happy about it and he was muttering and swearing quite a bit. But what was said I do not know. When Andy had won the match when leaving the court I think Federer swore at him. Perhaps when the match is replayed the highlights may show what went on.

That pass was called out, and Andy challenged it. Or maybe I'm thinking of a different point.

Aye my mind's a bit fuzzy now as well. Really want to see it back now. Maybe the reaction was to a different point.

I've just finished watching the whole crazy goddam beautiful thing!!

So proud of Andy. He's showing not only Fed, but the whole world he is the Real Deal. A year go he would never have been able to come back after the stuff that was thrown his way today.. Despite playing Like A Boss ..the tie-break losses (that awful o/h smash), the crowd support for Fed, and the desperate mind-games of Fed.

I've got the Fed-Gate bit on tape. I agree with LB that it referred to the earlier disputed point. You can't see what Fed says because the camera angle is behind his head, but whatever it was Andy (to me) reponded with "Sure..if that's the way you want to play it ass****." From that point on it was almost like a boxing match. Later, Fed made a gesture with his finger to his eye which is open to all kinds of speculation, but I read it as a reference to Andy's eyesight.
When you corner a rat it gets desperate.

It was so interesting to hear Patrick McEnroe (a staunch Fed luvvie) sing the praises of Andy throughout the whole match. Must have stuck in his craw, but great to hear anyway.

Brilliant, Brilliant Stuff from our Hero!!!!!!

PS:Thanks for the report, Nige. Smile

It was a brilliant match and a brilliant win. The crowd were on Fed's side the whole way and Fed's behaviour was in question on several occasions. The outstanding thing so often these days to my mind is the way Andy remains unperterbed by the mis-calls and mini-arguments which could so easily ruffle him. He just answers with an ace, a super shot and shakes it off. He was in control most of the time today. For me Fed was the one for Andy to knock of his perch and he did in grand style. He is his past bete-noir - Novak is the future one to beat and is a friendly one too. Let's hope he can do it on Sunday.

Great report again Nigel -it had me giggling out loud.
I thought Andy's t-shirt message was shining out of his eyes when they came out on court. How he looks like he believes he belongs in such big matches now.  Am intrigued as to what smug said. Andy v diplomatic in his presser it seems.  But there was a point when Andy turned back with quite a sneer on his face - I guess it must have been then.
It would have been nice if Andy could have done it in 4 (which was my prediction) but like USO final he showed greater grit really in bouncing back from 2 t-bs to break smug. Perfect timing for me as I had to go out just before 1 and was afraid it wouldn't have finished and was about to be done over by the chiropracter so couldn't have checked my phone for half an hour.
Am recording the highlights now on eurosport - will be interesting to watch with the different comms.  I think I feel another dvd purchase coming on somehow  yay

Brilliant match report, very happy reading  clap clap clap clap! I don't know Whack The Mole, but I get the idea, so it wasn't entirely lost on me. Lovely stuff. The line about the 2008 Olympics was inspired!

Oh I do so love seeing Federer reduced to a foul-mouthed, ranting fool, and Andy has mastered how to do it. I don't know what was said by Federer, but the look of satisfaction on Andy's face was priceless. I swear he was thinking 'gotcha!', or some such thing. It's funny though, having spent some of the match (I watched on the BBC) talking about how Andy's demeanour has changed on court, and also saying at one point that he shouldn't go back to giving off negative signals, they never said a word, apart from a dismissive apology for Federer's language, about Federer's behaviour. Oh, and you could hear Federer swearing quite clearly, so in my book the umpire should have given a code violation.

It was just brilliant to see Andy being so aggressive out there. He never really looked out of it at any point, and for the vast majority of the match was the better player. It was a bit of a shame about the second set tie-break, and a shame Andy couldn't close it out in four, but it didn't matter in the end. Andy was all over the fifth like a rash. It was a quick set.

I still think Andy is going to win the AO. I'll believe he isn't when he doesn't. I don't think we should all do the 'oh well if he doesn't win.....' thing until he has actually lost, if he loses. Today may well have been the first big test he has had, but he has passed it with flying colours. Yes, he had a brief lapse of concentration, but he regrouped and got over it quickly. I might go as far as to say that Federer might just have played Andy into his best form, but to be honest I don't get the feeling Andy will be asking to practice with him any time soon. Mind you, I'd love to be a fly on the wall if he did lol.

The other thing which pleased me was Murray's message to the organisers of the tournament who  had gone to great lengths to nurse Federer through the competition by giving him the best conditions to play in and once Murray got there beating their favourite player fair and square Great
