I say this completely objectively, you are probably the most immature member we have had here in at least a year. That's not an insult, just an observation.
Oh, I take that back. I just remembered about 'Sunniii' but that would still make you second most immature going by my objective observation.

Northern Ireland got a rougher deal than Scotland and in a lot more recent memory......but what the f**k is the point in blaming English people today when they had nothing to do with it!!!  doh

Exactly. I'd be a complete hypocrite if I did that. I was furious when Tony Blair was asked to apologise for slavery, so I'm not going to hold modern England accountable for sh*t that occurred centuries ago.

While the overall plot is essentially accurate (Scottish oppression), Mel Gibson really did use a lot of dramatic licence. Much of Braveheart is fictional, since it's actually based on a poem, from what I remember.

I do agree that a lot of gullible Scots believe every scene of Braveheart is historically accurate and, therefore, their hatred of the English grew.

Does anyone know anything about migration from Scotland to England and vice-versa? Would I be right in guessing that lots of Scots have English ancestors from those sort of times, and even more English have Scottish ancestors from then?

Yeah, I always hate that. Like when the Australian PM had to apologise for what happened to the aborigines.

Glad Andy's pulled out, I'd much prefer him to focus on making a full recovery than on a DC tie that isn't really that important. It sounds like it could be serious though, hopefully he's well enough for Indian Wells.

On the other topic, I've never understood why so many people think Scottish people shouldn't have a friendly sporting rivalry with the English. For me it's the international version of a derby - you don't see people saying Celtic fans should support Rangers, Everton fans should support Liverpool, Newcastle fans should support Sunderland, so why does a similar rivalry in an international context carry such negative connotations? As long as it's not taken too far, what's the problem? For that matter, even if Andy really did support anyone playing England, why is that such a bad thing?

I agree with you Torin, and so would most of the people who posted earlier. I think they were speaking more of hate some Scots have for the English (and vice-versa, to a lesser degree).

I know a tiny bit about it - my dad's taken an interest in history since he retired. From conversations I've had with him, the British population has always been pretty mobile - much more so than I had previously thought.

To take my family as an anecdotal example, going back through the family tree - I was born in Scotland to Welsh and English parents. Trace my dad's family back and within 6 or 7 generations there are strands in south-west Scotland that likely came over from Ireland, a pretty good coverage across England, and a couple of people who emigrated (I suspect 'emigrated' but not sure) to Australia. And apparently that's not uncommon.

Yes, the hate of people I don't understand - it's sad when people can't differentiate between dislike of a nation's sports teams and dislike of the actual people from that nation.

That's the problem. Many people take it far too seriously.

Some people do, certainly. I think it's the minority though, based on my admittedly limited experience.

I quite genuinely believe a lot of Scots were influenced by Braveheart. I was about 13 at the time and I was one of them. It made my blood boil, but you realise the absurdity of it all when you mature. I was a teenager, though. I knew grown men and women who swallowed Braveheart scene for scene, believing it to be an accurate depiction of events.

For example, many people don't know that jus primae noctis was never invoked by Longshanks. It was a plot device. lol

I have no idea what's real or not about Braveheart... was the bit where he had his guts torn out in public real? And the shout of "Freedom" when it happened?
