^ He needs to take his chances, despite all the odds - he should not be relying on a crowd or anyone else - he knows this.  He did have chances in AO final, no doubt - but he lost out to a far more contented, together and successful individual.  Andy has the game to beat the best in the world.  It's his mentality I worry about.  Frown

It depends on where you are with yourself....  A home crowd can give you a lift, but they can't do it for you.

I'm so disappointed that Andy Murray has withdrawn from Marseille. As an exiled Scot in Marseille, I bought my tickets to see him here as soon as they came out in November! This is the second year in a row that he's withdrawn at the last minute from Marseille - it's really irrespectful of the tournament organisers and public. Last year he at least sent an e-mail to apologise and had a decent reason for not coming - and promised to come this year - apparantly his word's not worth much. He's just gone down a lot in my estime.

Frown So disappointing for you.  But it might be worth a lot in the long term.  Not much of a consolation, though.

I agree with what you're saying about Andy's lack of respect to the tourney organisers.

^ I think they just have to suck it up.  He can't be all things to all people.  He's going to disappoint many with the decisions he makes in order to further himself.  It's about doing the best he can, with what he has to work with.  Got to trust that he and his team are making the right decisions, meantime.

The Wimbledon crowd (especially on Centre Court) tend to be conservative and relatively reserved, mostly middle-Englanders who appear to be happy to have got lucky in the ballot.  They can be strangely apathetic and at times even lack-lustre in their appreciation.  I cringe at their twee-ness when they go into raptures of delight and laughter at the smallest incident such as a ball-kid dropping a ball or a pigeon flying on to the court.  They are enjoying their big day out and for some of them the strawberries and cream and Pim's and the Mexican Wave are more important and enjoyable than the tennis.

And just because Wimbledon is in Great Britain doesn't mean they are all supporting the Brits - far from it.  People come from all over the world to the premier tennis tournament and the crowd is incredibly cosmopolitan.  I remember being on Henman Hill watching Tim on the big screen and being surprised how low-key the support for him was.  Most people were enjoying their picnics and drinking their drinks and chatting away while setpoints and matchpoints were being fiercely contested.  It is very different being there to the drama that is conveyed by the media. 

A Murray-Federer Wimbledon final would be the dream ticket - but Andy would still have his work cut out getting that famous crowd behind him.  Every time he's played Federer, even as a teenager, jolly Roger's fans seem to come out of the woodwork.  Andy has never had the luxury of being treated as the underdog, they have always feared him too much.  It is most unusual as a young up-and- coming player against a well-established serial winner usually gets the crowd behind him.  We saw how Federer's fans prevailed at the London O2 last November.  Most of us will just have to cheer Andy on from our armchairs and watch proudly when he lifts that most famous of all trophies. yay

^ I'm laughing away at the 'Jolly Roger' reference.  I'm quite shocked about what you say about 'Henman Hill' though?  confused  I'd have been agonising every point.  Why do people go to these tournies if they're not all that fussed.  Bugger off and allow real fans to get in there........  cmon yeah  Very Happy

Although I realise that buying tickets so far in advance of matches is essential, I feel that people just have to accept that things may not turn out as expected.  Hopefully you'll still go and appreciate the other players.

It does seem a bit tough on the organisers, but would it have made much difference if Andy had pulled out earlier in the week?
"Jolly Roger" Smile does it quite a lot, but then maybe that's his prerogative .....?

As for Henman Hill, I can't believe the crowds are there just for a day out!! confused  As a long-time tennis fan who used to stand Centre Court-side before it was made all-seater, I would love to be there if my circumstances permitted it.

Maybe that because it was Henman Hill as opposed to Murray Mound, but that is sooo not the impression I got when I was there. There was not an inch of grass empty and sure people were having picnics etc but rushing to pour pimms in between points and stuff, and it didn't seem too reserved to me Think

And I can see what you're saying about the calmness of centre court, but in fairness, we don't really know how they will react to a Brit in the final.

I agree he should not be bothering about ranking,  He should concentrate on the masters 1000 and the slams.  He may play in a couple of lesser events. The players are getting far to many injuries.  Just look at Rafa the style of tennis he plays has caused so much damage to his knees.  He does not look the same player and I will be surprised if he does not play in so many tournaments.  If he continues to play the way he does he may have to retire because of serious damage to his knees.
