Slapdash Murray crashes out again

Quote

Andy Murray suffered yet another early Masters exit, losing 3-6, 4-6 to Tomas Berdych. After a bright start the Scot lost his way and was defeated by an opponent playing solid but unspectacular tennis.

Berdych has long been a thorn in Murray's side, but this time the Scot was the architect of his own downfall. The Wimbledon champion was at his profligate worst, heaping pressure on his opponent before committing inexplicable unforced errors and donating service games.

Paradoxically Murray looked the better player at the start, pinning Berdych to the back of the court with aggressive play. The Scot also looked secure on serve until a sequence of unforced errors in the eighth game handed his opponent a break. Berdych served the set out to love and Murray's wagon was wobbling.

The Scot started the second set well, securing three break points in the first game. He was unable to convert and immediately dropped his own serve. This proved decisive and Berdych cruised to victory.

This was a peculiar performance from Murray who showed flashes of genius but was far too inconsistent from the back of the court. Any pressure the Scot exerted on his opponent was invariably released with an unforced error.

Since joining with Lendl Murray's record outside of slams has been decidedly patchy and the Scot has now lost before the semi-finals in six of the last 8 Masters events. Whether this is part of an overarching plan or just lack of motivation is subject of some speculation. If the world number two defends his US Open crown then this approach will be vindicated - so perhaps it's best to reserve final judgement until the trophy is held aloft at Flushing Meadows.

It's called journalistic licence.    Sounds better that way- at least it does to the writer.

and at least get your facts right - it was 4-6 not 3-6 in 2nd set.  Why oh why is it always boogers who has the chance to drip his poison into the match report when Andy loses? And I agree with rob that losing 2 breaks of serve to no 6 seed is hardly 'crashing' out - and really can't we do better than use such cliches again?

Andy started like an express train and his attitude indicated to Berdych and to the world that he is a Grand Slam winner. Unfortunately, the train took a wrong turn, ended up on the wrong track and drove straight onto the buffers.

Ah well! There is still the USO!

Completely agree. There is something very unsavory about the delight he seems to take in writing the nastiest report he can.

Worse still it is not even accurate and the pic has no relevance to the report.      Smacks of  tabloid journalism.

Dunning & Kruger are the 2 words that always spring to mind whenever I see one of this dreary curmudgeons posts.
I wonder how successful he is in his own chosen profession that he can come on here & incessantly attack Andy whenever the possibility arises.
Judging by the loftiness of his condescension maybe very, although tbh
I doubt he even has a job right now.

Well said both.  As for "Murray crashes out again" - what's that supposed to mean? He's gone out in the last two tournaments he's played, that's all.  What about Brisbane, the AO final, Miami, Queens and Wimbledon?  And never mind the fact that he was unable to play for most of the clay-court season due to injury?

The fact that a guest felt it necessary to post a very relevant comment says it all really.  These reports must look so inviting to visitors to the forum. Rolling Eyes
