In a topsy turvy match at the O2 tonight, Del Potro defeated Roger Federer in 3 sets to prevent Andy Murray qualifying from the group stages of the WTF event. Murray could have secured qualification by defeating Verdasco in straight sets earlier today, but failed to do so.

Had Federer secured at least four games in the final set, Murray would have taken Del Potro's place. Unfortunately (or suspiciously, for the conspiracy theorists) a curiously slack service game from the world number one at *3-4 handed Del Potro the opportunity to break and serve for the match.

Federer and Del Potro will advance from group A, with the Robin Soderling already having secured qualification from group B. The remaining semi-finalist will be decided tomorrow when the final group B matches are played.

After the match, a confused Murray posted a message on his Twitter account saying, "Anyone know what's going on? I think I'm out but the rules aren't worded too well."

I didn't think Federer had it in him to intentionally lose the match because of his hatred towards Murray but now I'm reconsidering... seems unlikely though.

That seems to be the general consensus now, how could anyone cheer for fed or dp after that blatant slap in the face!

No, I think it pretty unlikely that Fed lost in that way intentionally. It's not that uncommon for a player to waste a couple of break chances and then get broken in the subsequent service game. Still galling if you're a Murray fan.

Anyhow, it's all his (Murrays) own fault. There are so many ways he could have secured qualification. Not dropping serve to Del Potro when serving for the first set on Sunday. Actually finding a serve and holding for 6-2 in the final set on Tuesday. Nobody else to blame.

Hopefully he'll get some good rest and fix the now numerous dodgy aspects of his game. Perhaps the impeding drop down to #5 will also provide some impetus. I can't help but think this is wistful thinking though.

Don't think he's that low...he hates losing to anyone. Also would probably have liked to have had the chance to beat Andy twice in a week Smile

Dunno.  I'm reluctant to have a knee jerk to this.  As Boogers said, Andy had it all in his own hands at the end of the day.  Fed did look like an actor at times, but maybe that's just because I was looking for it....  Shrug

Wasn't a fix. No chance. He was down 15-40 at 3-3 and cleaned the line with a second serve.

I don't think Federer deliberately lost but the way it turned out, makes you wonder.

This is an absolute joke, just a scandal really. Not only is it ridiculously unfair on the players not knowing where they stand, the crowd haven't got a clue what's going on and who to support, but what's even worse is the whole thing was decided because Del Potro won 45 games and lost 43 games, while Andy Murray won 44 and lost 43. There is no way the difference in that is significant in any way, shape or form! What a bizarre and arbitrary deciding factor.

Also, Federer was in a position where he could decide which of his opponents went through with him to the next round. I'm not saying he fixed it by any means, but he had the power and that's not right.

This event should be a knock out tournament. It's what tennis is all about, not mathematics.

If that happens, Murray is down to #5 and has little prospect of regaining #4 until the clay season.
