Murray Andy - News Icon
Andy Murray has come through his first round match against Igor Kunitsyn 6-2 6-3 at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

In his first match since reaching the final at the Australian Open, Murray started off slowly saving break points before holding serve. Then came an extraordinary game that lasted 24 minutes in which neither player could string enough points together to win the game. Murray was finally able to break at the ninth opportunity.

The set then slowly but comfortably went with serve until Kunitsyn served at 2-5. Murray found himself with another break point, and this time a set point, which he converted.

A double fault break point down in the opening game of the second set handed the Russian an early break but Murray inevitably broke back immediately. Another break of the Kunitsyn serve towards the end of the set helped the third seed secure victory.

5live tennis's twitter...
Murray's ankle a bit sore, he felt a bit out of breath at the start of match. Also confirms he doesn't ask his butler to make tea for him.

This is the first we've heard about an ankle problem.  Does this explain Marseille withdrawal and the fact that he hasn't been training or practising much?  Andy did enough to get through, but any injury has to be a concern.

Wouldn't worry too much, he's always carrying some sort of niggle.

Realise you'll read all about it in today's papers, but, although I don't necessarily believe everything I read, I found this report from the Guardian online a bit disturbing - it refers to Andy's "muted but victorious" return and openly questions his fitness - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/feb/22/andy-murray-beats-igor-kunitsyn-dubai

Rachie - I recall Greg Rusedski's comment during the Poland Davis Cup tie that Andy tends to over-dramatise his injuries.  Maybe he has a point?

Does anyone else feel that andy has made a bad decision not training much prior to this tournemount? I know its not a major or master, but his reasoning is pretty werid, to rest his body so its better for the whole tour, yet he seems to have made it worse for himself so far... I can't understand the logic behind his decision too well.

It does seem odd.  His body seems to be packing in.  Think he'd have at least done some light training before Dubai and reckon he'll need to put in some hard work before Indian Wells.

I have read this article somewhere last night that the reason he chose not to do much training was due to some sort of physical problems with his back, ankle and knee that he thought would be necessary to just rest his body before the tournement.

If it's true according to the article, I believe he's made the right decision, afterall, there's much more to come in future, isn't it?

Nice win for Andy, though he sounds like he's a bit 'rusty' - 24 minute game. blink

Are we back to quizzing his judgement again though?  Let the guy just play tennis and let's see what happens eh? Very Happy
