We were quite happy not being married, and never really fancied the whole big wedding thing, so there didn't seem much point. We eventually did it, partly for boring legal/financial reasons, and 40 years together since our first (teenage) date seemed worth celebrating. We had a fun day.

Me neither. Waste of money and didn't ever feel the need for being the centre of attention. Our wedding was arranged, done and dusted within 3 weeks. It was good fun!

Oddest thing was that a couple of weeks later I had to go to the Town Hall to re-register the births of our children (aged 23 and 20) because, with our marriage, their original birth certificates became "invalid".
confused Why was that? Our son was born before our marriage.

Same here. It took about 20 minutes to organise. No new dress, diet, or hairdo - though I did buy a new pair of tights. We had a lovely lunch with our 4 guests in a restaurant run by a Scottish/ New Zealand couple we've known for years. Then a rock 'n roll gig in Camden with our son's band playing.

Re-registering the kids was weird - I felt slightly offended, as if they were being declared invalid! But it's just a new certificate, with info copied from the book they were originally registered in. Cost £8.

Is anyone helping you? It's tough if you don't have support.
My brilliant son was 'let go' from his job after his 2nd day. He had difficulty following verbal instructions, and his manager was a jackass.
Long, boring story.. but he does have me and I will continue to be in his corner for as long as it takes. Now that I'm back from hols, and he's had space to process, I will help him get stuck in again, but first will get him into volunteering. He is keen to help and be constructive.. he just struggles with organizing himself.

You know the offer is still there from my son to talk anytime via pm, and I trust you found him to be a well-rounded, empathetic and intelligent lad. In fact, I've no doubt about that.
