A wally dug is a porcelain figure of a dog - the word 'wallies' being Scots/Glaswegian for false teeth originating in the days when these were made of porcelain. These dogs, which were first made in the Victorian era, always came in pairs and were mirror images of each other, and they were a common sight on many a Scottish mantelpiece in days gone by.
