By popular request...
Starting with the simple stuff
Numbers 1-10
1 - un [een]
2 - dau [dye]
3 - tri [tree]
4 - pedwar [ped-wahr]
5 - pump [pimp]
6 - chwech [ummm....hard to explain - the ch is at the back of the throat - NOT ch as in church - like the 'ch' in the German 'durch']
7 - saith [s-ai (as in eye)-th]
8 - wyth [oyth]
9 - naw [now]
10 - deg [dehg]
Letters
Welsh alphabet:
a b c ch d dd e f ff g h i l ll m n ng o p ph r rh s th u w y
Pronunciation points
u in welsh is like the 'i' in 'pig'
f in welsh is like the v in 'vowel'
ff in welsh is like 'f' in english, but a little bit longer
y in welsh sounds like 'uh'
dd in welsh is a like 'th' in 'the' but a little softer
ll in welsh is impossible to explain...
Those are the simple points...other are easier to explain in the context of words

On a more poignant note, how many more years do you see Welsh surviving Laura? Are the Welsh government trying to perpetuate it through teaching, from grassroots level?
The Scottish government face the same problem with Gaelic.

I think Welsh is in a much better position than Gaelic, certainly in a position to go on indefinitely. It's compulsory in all English medium schools up to the age of 16...though that doesn't necessarily make people like it. Perhaps more importantly there's a strong core of Welsh medium schools, many of which are really excellent in academics, music, drama and sport
There are still areas where you hear very little English in everyday life...and it's quite common to hear a conversation in Welsh when you're walking through the middle of Cardiff...

That's certainly true... I've heard a fair amount of spoken Welsh the last few times I've been in Wales (north, mid, and south...)
Long may it continue...

I think it's too late for Gaelic, though I do have a few friends that speak and study it but they're mostly from the western isles.
