She went there to do voluntary work a year ago, and the place got under her skin.  She always says - I just want to make a difference, and I can't do that in the UK...

Places like that kind of force you to want to make a difference. It's quite profound. Glad she's using her best ability to help these people, makes me want to make a difference too. You must be so pleased with her.

Yeah - I think when you see what they have -v- what we have, it does make you very humble.  It's nice to want to make a difference, and it takes a lot of courage.  She's my daughter, but her own person, and if I'm honest - she's way, way braver than me!

I have worked in different kinds of situations whilst being a psychiatric nurse. I worked in a research unit during my training also with the elderly with dementia so I covered quite a wide range of patients. I found that working with dementia can be soul destroying. I remember a lady who had been a prof in Edinburgh she was tall and elegant and had beautiful clothes she lost a lot of weight and looked like a skeleton. I felt for her she passed away during my shift. This may sound terrible but I was glad she died peacefully and not in pain.Dementia is terrible the person turns from all they were to an empty shell. More research is required into this terrible illness unfortunately it is not considered  important enough. It does not receive the funds to spend to improve the understanding of it and medications that do not turn patients into zombies. There are more and more elderly people in the community so it is going to be a major crisis for the health service.

I bloody hope not, or I'll be in an early grave!  Very Happy  No - she's gathering experience and hopes to come back and do a course in tropical diseases, which would indicate she's now got the wanderlust and will go away again.  As much as I worry - if she's happy, I'm delighted.
