That's the 'posh' word for them! In Glasgow, we almost had two different languages. The posh people would say things like  "Oh Jeck you het's beshed flet!" and the ordinary folk [like masel'] would say things like "Saperty it Jack's hoos ranite! Sgonny be a rerrterr! Jist bring a boa'le!"  Very Happy

According to the dictionary they're called that because the coloured mudguard line round them (the bit where the sole joins the uppers) resembles the plimsole line on a ship.  Anyway I'm not surprised you didn't know what sannies meant because 'sannies' is a Glaswegian expression - not to be confused with 'sannie' = a sandwich. Rolling Eyes  As for myself, we always called them gym shoes.
