4-0

I would have had them taking a few penalties in training at least Very Happy
And I wouldn't have subbed on my 4th choice central defender to take one either. I reckon I may have possibly even considered taking a match-fit striker or 2 Wink At least 1 with premiership experience anyway.

Not in the squad, he's been put in the England U21s where he belongs.  He played the day before in the U21s dismal 2-2 draw with heavyweights of world football Moldova. He scored after 2 and a half minutes on debut, so something positive came from it at least.
Moldova FFS. Alas these guys are the best we have after the current crop of players in the full national squad, thanks to the lack of English players being given chances in the premiership. These are the guys who will make up a chunk of the next world cup team.

What do you guys think? It will be a very competetive division. Thanks for that Allan.

I think financially it was a good decision as it will mean a two league professional set-up with a semi-professional league below and then regional amateur teams. At the moment the jump from the first division to the SPL wasn't really beneficial to that many teams.

I agree. I think that it could be beneficial to Scottish Football. Having 4 leagues isn't doing anything, there are too many clubs that make no money.

Eventually the SPL should be increased to 16 teams and the SPL2 too. With a 2 up, 2 down and a play-off between 3rd bottom and 3rd top. 30 games a year and the cup comps would be fine. It would make it more competitive, only playing each team twice a year rather than 4 times. It would also bring in new sponsorship and tv deals hopefully.

But at least this is a step in the right direction for now!

I disagree with that actually. I think 12 teams is almost too big as it is especially if we move to a two-tier league. However I can't see them changing this anytime soon so a 12 and 10 or 12 and 12 maximum is about a big as it should get. I do agree with a two up to down proposal though although I think possibly it should be one up one down to the SFL with a 2nd bottom/top playoff. I'm sure we'll see more info in the next few years as this progresses though, it's not as if our opinions on the matter will make any difference.

The 2 up, 2 down was in reference to between SPL and SPL2. I agree only 1 team should go up from SFL. I dont mean right away it should change to 16 teams as there aren't enough teams capable of competing with the top 4/5 teams in SPL. After  a couple of years in SPL2, and more money. They could increase the teams. It gets very boring playing teams 4+ times a year, with the exception of local rivals. And the end of season split is daft!

But you're right, we could debate this point til the cows come home and it wont matter a bit.

I know but I was saying only 2up 2down between SPL1 and 2 with a 1up 1down + playoff between SPL2 and SFL1. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Big game tomorrow in the SPL. Could be an indication of how strong the Rangers team really are. First big test.

If we lose then we have serious work cut out for us.

The SPL was supposed to be some sort of silver bullet to cure all the premier leagues ills and provide financial security and increase competitiveness in the league. It is patently obvious that this has not happened with the exception of a blip last year before hearts self-destructed the league remains an old firm monopoly and with one up one down (if the 1st division club meets the criteria) it has become stagnant with too many meaningless games. The standard has also not improved with Scottish teams getting regularly horsed in Europe as they did when the old premier league set up was in place.

The proposed SPL2 will bring nothing to Scottish football and the supposed television deal is pie in the sky. Setanta are a commercial company and will only invest in a product they can make money from. Tomorrow I will attend the Greenock Morton versus Ayr United game and outwith the supporters of these two provincial clubs who would be interested in paying to see this game on TV? The old firm constantly complain about the lack of money they receive from TV, do you honestly think they will want to subsidise a lower league, it was this very reason that the split from the Scottish football league happened to begin with.

The new league is nothing more than the emperors new clothes and no matter what you call it, Airdrie versus Hamilton is still Airdrie versus Hamilton. What is there different to attract all this new sponsorship money? This is nothing more than greed on the part of certain club chairmen and based on self interest, with the population the size of Scotland it is time for a reality check. If provincial clubs need to cut their cloth to suit and go part time then so be it.

Finally I do not believe that artificial barriers to protect league status is in the interest of the Scottish game, team performance should be the only bases for promotion and relegation not stadium criteria.
