23-year-old Adlington, one of the many stars of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games is set to take off her swimming attire for the final time.

Seems pretty young to retire. But then perhaps after Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth gold medals all the lifetime goals have been achieved and there's nothing left to aim for so it might be hard to get motivated to keep putting in all those hours.
As an aside I don't understand the deal with the funding cuts. "Well we didn't do aswell as we wanted in swimming so lets cut the funding so we do even worse in the future." Surely you try and give it more help to take it forward don't you?

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

I did wonder myself what this thread was going to be about!
However, to quote the lady herself - "Swimming is still in my heart but, physically, I'm ready to finish completely" - so it's clear that she feels that her body has had enough punishment from the endless hours of training and taking part in competitions.
Maybe it will come as a suprise to those who feel that, at the age of 23, she shouldn't be feeling this way, but it makes sense to me that if she knows her body is telling her something then she's right to listen to it rather than struggle on and risk burn-out and possible permanent physical harm. Also there could be the element, which Alex has pointed out in his post, that she might feel that she has fulfilled her personal goals.
I understand she now wants to focus her energies on helping to tackle the nation's obesity epidemic and getting more young people to take up swimming, to which end she is going to establish swimming camps through a foundation which she has created, but I can only assume that, in view of the totally illogical decision to cut back on funding for swimming, that these camps will be financed by herself, although she might possibly be eligible for help from the National Lottery.
