No we're not talking about England here, Scotland U19s have reached the semi-finals of the European Championships.

We played Portugal last week and drew 2-2 with them. We then lost to Spain and beat Turkey to take us through to the last 4 with Spain, Austria and the Czech Republic. We play the Czech Republic on Wednesday night. Btw in case anyone was wondering, England went out in the round of 28, finishing bottom of their group (which included the footballing heavyweights of Northern Ireland, Belgium and Serbia&Montenegro).

Now, where's that Portugal Shirt, must be around here somewhere....

England went out in the round of 28, finishing bottom of their group

Hardly suprising given the state of the premiership. I bet most of the players are plying their trade in the lower leagues. Certainly won't be many of them on the books of the top premiership clubs. Won't be long until most of the full national team are coming from the lower divisions too. Even this time round we had a guy who has never played a game, and Liverpool's 3rd choice goalkeeper going to the world cup, and there was really only 2 players left out the squad. FFS.

On 2nd thoughts, Portugal is definitely one shirt I could never wear.

Yeah. Scotlands youth teams have a lot of players who are regulars for their clubs and even though the SPL doesnt have the overall quality of the Premiership it still makes a huge difference.

HA HA!  :P Hilarious responses by Mark and invisibleman. laughed out loud about supporting anyone else. Yeah, I think you're right unfortunately England could be in trouble unless there's  a cap on foreign players in the premiership. The problem is there's too many vested interests and too much money. Would fans of strong clubs like Chelsea be prepared to see their team do less well with home-grown players for the benefit of the national team. Scotland went down that road, but simply couldn't afford to sustain it, unfortunately England can.
Oh, by the way, am I the only one who finds it a bit distasteful how Abramovich made his money (robbing the Russian people of billions and billions of their oil wealth). I never hear this criticism from EL TEl and the other pundits.

Trust me, you aint the only one. For someone to make that kind of money in a time of communism, well let's not get into that here.....

I'm an Arsenal fan and we are the worst at this. I disagree that playing home grown players would make the team achieve less. I can't see how the likes of David Bentley could possibly have been worse than Flamini, Song and Diaby. Upson and Hoyte are superior to Cygan, and Stuart Taylor is vastly superior to Almunia. Always thought he'd be our next No. 1 after Seaman and I was sad when he left. Was also saddened to read about Kerrea Gilbert going out on loan to Cardiff the other day. He was superb when he got his chance last season and I really thought he'd fight it out with Eboue for the RB spot this coming season. With Sol Campbell already gone, and Ashley Cole's departure surely only days away, along with Walcott who will probably go on loan somewhere, forget about a new stadium, for me it will be a sad day in the club's history when they begin the new season with not one home grown player in the entire squad. I don't support my 'home club' anymore, just a group of various nationalities who play where they used to play. And in fact, they don't even play there anymore. I suppose my enthusiasm and exictement will grow when the season comes around, but at the moment I'm disillusioned with the whole thing.

Rant over (if I posted this stuff on my Arsenal forum I'd get slaughtered, so it goes here lol).
