So I guess they have defied Neil's judgement of them as 'crap'. Very Happy

And as I said at the time, no less than the semi finals for Hiddink. I did expect the Dutch to win given how well they had been playing, but Hiddink is the master at these tournaments no matter who he coaches. It almost makes me cry to think about what he could have done with the England team. Should have broken the bank to get him after this tournament.

How good is that Arshavin guy? That was the first time I had seen him as I missed the Russia-Sweden game and he is class. Can't believe he's 27 I didn't even really know about him until the UEFA Cup final. I suppose that's because he plays for an unfashionable club in an unfashionable league. He'll be somewhere big next season after this tournament. Probably Chelsea. Pretty much exactly what we need but at 27, probably too old for Wenger to consider. Frown  Although he'd be much too expensive now anyway.

I wonder why Polgrebnyak didn't get a call-up for this tournament... :hmmm:

He's injured, had to withdraw from the squad.

As for Arshavin, Russia look a different team with him in the starting XI - intelligent, pacy playey who ripped us apart in the UEFA Cup final. Would be surprised if he's still at Zenit next season.

He certainly looks the business. Many players set the world alight at these tournaments but then turn out to not really be much good at a top club so he could well be another Karel Poborsky, El Hadji Diouf or Kleberson. But from what I've read it sounds like he's been doing it for a while at Zenit. Just hasn't been a big name because of where he plays.

His value would have just increased massively and I can't imagine him going for less than 18-20m which certainly prices us out of the market. Pretty certain he'll end up at Chelsea, Abramovich will make sure of it. They tend to flash their cash towards whoever is the latest flavour of the month, regardless of who else they already have in similar roles. Given that they'll also have Ballack/Deco/Joe Cole/Malouda/SWP/Lampard (if he doesn't leave) etc I'm not so sure it would be the best move for him at least in football terms. He's going somewhere big anyway, that's for certain.

Russia got justice in the end, they brought some amazing football. Sad for Holland, but they had a good run.

Hopefully Spain surprises, only team I like that's still in the running.

Figured he must have been...

Anyway, how would you pronounce Arshavin's name, as I've heard it two different ways...

Ar-sha-veen or Ar-shav-in?

Well that was very annoying. Sat there for about 110 minutes watching a pretty average game and then Sky lost the coverage. With no explanation they filled in with those 'Past Euros' clips they show at half time and finally rejoined the action at 3-1 in the shootout. Not even so much as a "we are experiencing technical difficulties, sorry for the inconvenience" across the bottom of the screen as you would usually get. ranting

So I only got 1 semi finalist right. And there is a going to be 1 re-match, but the opposite one. Whistle
Like I said, that's the beauty of football. Something might seem more likely but it never is. If Russia can re-produce their game from yesterday then I would back them to beat Spain. Got a feeling that will be another 120 minute plus job. Neither of them will beat Germany in a final though, and neither will Turkey in the semi final.

As a side note completely irrelavant to the game, during half time here they showed Casillas and Torres taking a quiz on Spain's history at the Euros. Torres looked a bit of an idiot and only got 2/5 but Casillas knew everything. First question asked the year Spain won it and who they beat in the final and Torres replied with "no idea, I think it was before I was born." lol Casillas on the other hand even knew the scorers.

Holland have been terrific to watch, I was gutted to see them go out, especially after that equaliser... Crying or Very sad

They use 'и' which is half way between the 2 sounds you mentioned but I'd say Ar-sha-vin with an accent on the 2nd syllable. Smile

Mon the Russians! cmon yeah

In an interesting piece of trivia, Spain have lost on penalties 3 times on the 22nd June (World Cup 1986, Euro 96 and World Cup 2002) so it's quite amazing they won! lol

And they haven't beaten Italy competitively for something like 80 years.
The two semis are played on Wednesday and Thursday - Germany vs Turkey on Wednesday, and Russia vs Spain on Thursday. The finals on Sunday.

They did break that curse wide open didn't they? The game wasn't terribly exciting until Cassillas made that save with his left foot off the line! I didn't get to watch the penalties though.
