There has to be a defender between the striker and the goalie when the ball is passed.

If a goal is considered to have been scored by a striker (or indeed any other player) who's offside then it doesn't count.

A player is deemed offside when -
He is in the opposition half
The ball is played towards the opposition goal
The player in question is directly involved in play (i.e. receiveing the ball)
The player in question is nearer to the opposition goal than the last defender at the time the ball is played forward.
Subsequently, if a player becomes involved shortly after the ball has been played and WAS in an offside position before hand, he is then deemed offside. THis is purely down to the discretion of officials as to when a player becomes involved and how long to wait til the offside time has elapsed.
