Do seedings in the WC decide the teams you play against first like in tennis?

If you are seeded first, then you will theoretically be the strongest team in the group.
So if England were seeded first, they would be the strongest team and have inferior opposition in the group (on paper that is)

The seedings we're talking about here are for the qualification groups. In the world cup as well they use seedings, but only for the groups, not for the knock-out stages...

Oh so it decides what type of group they are in? Or is it just something that states they are favourites but technically gives them nothing different from the other teams?

If they're first seeds, they would not be in the same group as someone like France or Italy etc., but second seeds could be in the same group.
There is a big difference between first and second seeds, even more then being second seeds rather then third or fourth, especially by 2010, when only the top team in the group is guaranteed qualification...

Thanks... I just wanted to know whether the seeding would decide the teams they play against and now I understand it does play some role in that sense just like tennis

The way it works precisely, i think, is that there are 9 groups, each group gets one first seed, one second seed etc.

And deservedly so. We will obviously be in a group with Germany.
I'm suprised that it's Romania who are that high though, given they haven't qualified for anything since Euro 2000 and we've made the quarter finals at the 3 major tournaments since then. Wonder how that works.

I've just been looking around. Noone seems able to work out the future rankings, and whether Romania will catch England up. Whats so complicated? Why don't they work it out? If you have all the details of the last 4 years it doesn't look too complicated.
