Romance is in the air as tennis sex symbols team up

IT IS news that will break the hearts of male and female tennis fans everywhere.
   For Russian sex symbol and model Maria Sharapova, conqueror of Wimbledon and the entire British male population, is being romantically linked with American star Andy Roddick, once voted one of the planet’s most desirable men.
   Rumours are rife that romance is in the air at the Australian Open in Melbourne after the pair have been sighted spending a great deal of their leisure time together.
   Glamorous Sharapova, 18, spent two hours watching Roddick playing poker in the city’s Crown Casino this week. The pair left together, fuelling speculation that their friendship has become extremely close.
   ‘They are not the types to go in for public displays of affection but they appeared to be an item,’ said one observer.
   Four months ago, 23-year-old Roddick – Wimbledon runner-up to world No 1 Roger Federer for
the past two years – unexpectedly turned up when Sharapova launched her own brand of perfume at the US Open in New York.
   ‘There has been a lot of speculation over the strength of the friendship between Maria and Andy ever since,’ said BBC pundit John Lloyd.
   Sharapova, who famously called her mother on her mobile phone from the Centre Court after winning the Wimbledon crown in 2004, is recognised as the world’s most glamorous sportswoman.
   Before Christmas, she was a guest of Sir Richard Branson at his luxurious home on the Caribbean island of Necker.
   ‘Richard invited me for a week,’ she revealed last week as she prepared for her first-round match against Germany’s Sandra Kloesel tomorrow. ‘It was like having your own island to yourself. It was fun.’
   Sharapova is estimated to earn £10.5 million a year from sponsorship and endorsement deals – light years away from her lowly upbringing in Siberia.
   Roddick – dubbed The Rocket because of his bullet-like serve, clocked at up to 152mph – has previously dated Hollywood actress Mandy Moore. Even TV presenter Anne Robinson flirted outrageously with him on a Wimbledon edition of The Weakest Link.
   He has not won a major championship since he captured the US Open in September 2003 but is second favourite for the Australian Open, where he plays Swiss qualifier Michael Lammer tomorrow night, giving Sharapova the opportunity to be courtside.
   Last night she did nothing to dampen speculation about their relationship, saying ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t comment on my personal life.’
