Sharapova gets beat so convincingly by Serena nowadays. I watched highlights of their AO 2005 encounter earlier - Williams won 2-6, 7-5, 8-6 - Sharapova served for the match twice, had 3MPs on her own serve and 3BPs on Williams serve at 6-6. Williams was fearless on the big points.

Incredibly Sharapova hasn't beaten her since. 2004 was the last time she beat Williams. When she was 17.

Bagel 3rd set. Ouch.

I wonder if she'll ever beat Serena again? At times today I thought she might do it, but not once Serena levelled the match. Credit to Serena though - she has a true champion's mentality, never giving up. I just wish more players could challenge her.

Problem for Maria is that her game is quite limited, as soon as she comes up against someone who can handle her  power but is a better mover, as is Serena, she is basically stuffed.

I really thought Maria had it in the bag this time after that first set and up 2 breaks in 2nd.

It's quite astonishing what Serena can still produce, given her age and health issues.

Serena was extremely focused in the 3rd set. Quite admirable.

I can't say I like Serena really, but I have come to admire her in a strange sort of way. Given what she went through with that foot injury and then the complications from that, she has come back so strongly. You can never rule her out, providing she's fit. I remember getting hooked, quite uncharacteristically for me with the women's side, on one of her AO matches this year. She was awesome, it was amazing to watch. It was a bit of a shame that she got injured, in her very next match if my memory serves me right.

Sharapova has yet to beat Serena since 2004. 11-2 overall H2H and Serena is 31 while Sharapova is 25. You know clearly who's the better player. And Serena didn't even play a powerful game in the 3rd set while Sharapova was busy bashing the ball left and right. Very one dimensional.
