From Fox Sports -

Rising Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic faces jail time and a $20,000 fine over his run-in with police last week.

He was charged with evading police after he allegedly refused to stop and later barricaded himself in his parents' Gold Coast, Queensland, home on Jan. 26.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $20,000 fine but his high-profile criminal lawyer Chris Nyst called the charges "little more than a storm in a tea cup."

Tomic was pulled over by police and fined twice in less than two hours before the standoff, and on Tuesday police served the 19-year-old with a notice to appear on two more driving-related charges.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on February 14 to face the charges.

Australian drivers with a provisional license are not allowed to drive high-powered cars, but Tomic has an exemption to drive his orange V8 BMW M3 to and from training.

Nyst said that was where the issue became confusing, but he believes Tomic did nothing wrong.

Nyst has appealed to Queensland police commissioner Bob Atkinson to review the situation and said he doubted the matter would go to court, although police insisted they had "more than enough evidence" against the world No. 34.

Why shouldn't it go to court if the police have the evidence to back up the charges?  Really don't agree with this one rule for one and another for celebrities mentality!

^^  I agree with both you and Alis - why should this laddie get any kind of privileges just because he happens to be a good tennis player.  If he's done wrong and his career goes down the shute, so be it.  Anyway if it's finally discovered he's been lying about his age ... Whistle

I suspect the Queensland police were slipped a few A$ to let that one go through...

lol  Apart from the Mary Decker incident during the 1984 Olympic 3000 metres, I don't see the connection to Tomic since it was our own Daily Mail which persuaded Budd's father to encourage her to apply for British citizenship, on the grounds that her grandfather was British, to circumvent the international sporting boycott of South Africa, so that such a talented athlete could compete for Britain in the Los Angeles Olympics that year.  Thanks to the DM's persistence, British citizenship was granted with remarkable speed - something which caused a lot of controversy, especially amongst those who opposed apartheid.

The connection is, that money talks and rules are bent, GB is not exempt.
BTW did anyone not oppose apartheid?

Yes, I see what you mean - and it doesn't only apply to sport unfortunately.

I don't think that applied to the British, Alis, except for a few bigots.  I just can't understand why one race or section of society should consider itself to be above another because of the colour of their skin.

Also now I'm wondering if there's another kind of connection. Australia has a quite rigid immigration policy so when were Tomics' allowed in? Before or after he displayed such talent?
Yes Aileen, that's what made the whole thing about Zola Budd so shocking Frown
