Aren't you meant to be able to hit a flat or slice serve with the chopper grip?
Yes, but I personally don't like flat serves with the chopper.

Thats fair enough. Got to go with whatever is most comfortable for you. I think the chopper grip gives you a great advantage though. I like being able to hit a variety of serves without having to change grip.

Yes, you can hit flat serves with chopper grip, I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. However, my flat serves are so much faster with incorrect grip I use but that could just be lack of practice with the correct grip.

I love using slice, feels great to take all the pace out of a rally, plus you can't handle it, it's hilarious.
Can you teach me slice? And I can teach you tennis
But seriously, how can one improve their net play - I assume it's hours and hours of what the players do during the warm up, coming up to the net and hitting short volleys. I have a **** reaction speed too.

It's about reaction time as well... I've always been good at the net, never had to be taught anything.

If it's not having enough time at the net, look to improve your footwork, perhaps taking a split-step on the centre line before moving to either side?
If it's your actual volleying, then we can work on that, it takes a lot of practice.

I'll give the later a go because I got taught the split-step, I'm sure it helps if you can actually volley properly. Is there nothing you want work on Mr Perfect?

Alot of it is just simply practicing over and over. You need to make sure you're technique is right when up at the net. Its essential that you are ready to 'punch' the ball. Best thing to do is to practice volleys with someone or a ball machine, then incorporate it into a game scenario. For example, you can only win a point from with a volley.

But you don't actually punch it right? As in there's no follow through, the racket is still and you generate speed through the angle... yea used to play one person on the baseline and one in the service box who is only allowed to volley.

On impact you push your racquet a few inchs forward in a very quick motion... it's not like a follow through as the racquet angle stays the same with the face moving forward.

You don't take a big swing at the ball and you don't have the normal follow through. That's where the majority of errors occur.

No, definitely no follow through.
Punch is the best word to describe it, quick jab.

Dare I say it, but I'd imagine doubles would give a little volleying practice too if you're into that sort of thing.
