David Nalbandian fined $8,000
« on: January 20, 2012, 06:23 PM »
Argentina's David Nalbandian was fined $8,000 for throwing water at an
Australian Open staff member following his controversial second round
loss to John Isner on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old Nalbandian was fined for unsportsmanlike behaviour following the match. Officials said he had thrown water at a member of tournament staff.
Nalbandian who lost the marathon match 4-6 6-3 2-6 7-6 10-8 to Isner, railed against umpire Kader Nouni following the match after the Frenchman overturned a point in the fifth set then refused to allow him to challenge the call through the Hawk-eye technology because he had taken too long to do so.
"I mean, it's ridiculous playing this kind of tournament with this kind of umpires," Nalbandian said after the match. "What did the ATP do for this?
"I mean, can you be that stupid to do that in that moment?"
He will appeal, said manager Carlos Costa.
story keeps developing: Janko Tipsarevic showed his support over twitter:

Of course it's not harsh. Firstly he's no doubt rich and secondly, he threw a heavy object at someone.

There has been some pretty dreadful umpiring this week IMO. Nalby definitely was hard done by, as was Dolly in the Tomic match. It doesn't excuse Nalbandian's behaviour - if he did throw water at an official - but it makes it more understandable.

WTA umpires. The real ones are on strike.

No as Grabcopy said many of the top level ATP umpires are on strike. They were also on strike at the US Open last year. I agree that the umpiring standards at the AO Open have been poor. Many of the umpires are from the WTA. I think the umpire in the Nalbandian match was called Nuni.
