Spanish qualifier Nicolas Almagro went through to the quarter finals of the Rome 2006 tennis masters on Thursday when his opponent Nikolay Davydenko pulled out with an ankle injury.
Almargo, number 54 in the world, won the first set of the third round 7-6 (6). Russian-born Davydenko, the number six seed, called the physiotherapist during the changeover before retiring.
Until that point, the match had been well balanced with both players exchanging heavy groundstrokes from the baseline. Almagro seemed to have decided to throw caution to the wind and was hitting with abandon on both wings. There were no breaks of serve, with the Spaniard taking his second set point.
Almagro moves forward to play world number one Roger Federer.http://www.internazionaliditalia.tv/page/Home/0,,11888,00.html
